Joe Paterno statue removed; NCAA to announce Penn State sanctions

• I understand that they are going to put the statue in the library to remind everyone to keep quiet.

  • Cold. But they ARE keeping Paterno's name on the library.

• Is it just me, am I missing an angle? I'm having a really big problem with chunks of the NCAA's penalties against Penn State.

    When I heard the penalties, I thought "why are they punishing the students/players?
    Vacating the record for those years is like telling players that they didn't accomplish anything. Plus, keeping them from bowl games is also punishing players that worked real hard to get there.
    What's next, taking away the degrees of everyone that graduated in that time period?
    Fines, yes. Punishing the administration, yes. Punishing the students and players, no.

    • They claim this IS to punish the football program, not the rest of the students. As for bowl games, remember they are allowing every player who wishes to to transfer to another school and be eligible to play immediately. They are also taking away footbal scholarships. So any player who really is there for football, as opposed to an education, will transfer now, and will never go there in the future. College football is nothing more that NFL farm teams and should be treated as such, not as a part of the school itself. Colleges claim that they spend millions on football because the money they make supports the rest of the school, but that is crap. THey reinvest every penny into ,ore perks for the football players. Not ALL athletes, mind you but FOOTBALL.

  • Everyone calls them really severe. But I yr prohibition on a bowl attendance, loss of a few scholarships doesn't sound toosevere to me. How about shutting the whole program down for a couple of years, then hire 100% different staff before re-opening.

• Evidently Joe's statue, like Joe himself, stayed around longer than it should have.

• It's a good thing Penn State is not using an Indian name such as "Fighting Sioux". The NCAA realizes that a "hostile and abusive" school name is way way worse than screwing kids in the shower.

• I see those kids camping out to protect his statue did a fine job.

    • It's good to see that there are a few who understand that, above all else, it is football that is important. Gee, am I in a sarcastic mood this morning?

      • How ANYONE can still support the people involved is beyond me. What kind of stone hearted person thinks covering up child sex abuse is somehow ok?

• An ignominious end to the Paterno era. The statue should be melted down and the metal used to make the bars of Sandusky's cell.

  • Or the hinge for his coffin.

• It's being moved to the Paterno library as a reminder to keep quiet.
