The official story has to change.
Back in the 1960s, there was only two big powers able to send something up there and technology available to civilians was less advanced, all the information is what both governments deemed releasble.
NASA have been changing the colors of the planet and what is its surface.

We are supposed to believe that the Martian atmosphere have less than 1% the density of that of Earth (what you have at an altitude of 30 kilometers) but that mean this should not be possible.

Even radiosonde balloons doesn't go that far. Additionally, a dust storm would be hard pressed to cover mount Everest on Earth but somehow, dust storms are able to cover-up much higher terrain on Mars. http://media.web.britannica.com/eb-media/63/73463-004-20ED402D.jpg

One thing I didn't see mentioned in that article is the different effects that different light has on something of a known color. If it's blue on earth, and shows up red on Mars, it could be either the camera's white balance settings, or the redness of the light coming through the atmosphere.
I'd have to look a lot closer at the question to know more, but I won't do that, because I don't really care.
Good thing they found signs of life on Mars, now if they could find signs of intelligent life in Washington DC.
