• This kind of thing has been going on for a long time in various municipalities.. The hook was often planted under the pretense of a drug search. One marijuana seed and the whole vehicle is seized and auctioned off.

  Now this sounds much much worse. One of the benefits of civilization is that we don't have to fight our way through bandits and raiders to do commerce or travel. But this is highway robbery

• I do not regularly travel across the country much anymore and even when I did carry wads of cash was not a regular occurrence. I always liked the pretty state of Tennessee, especially the area around Chattanooga. Now that having an out of state registration tag on the car is enough reason for the rotten cops to pull you over, I'll have to detour around the whole darn state. Well, that's only if I ever drive further than 20 bucks will get me.

  • Tennessee IS a beautiful place, and when I was there, I was treated wonderfully by the people. But this backwards method of fundraising is unbelievable. What happened to guilty until proven innocent?

    Police are getting out of hand in a lot of areas, with the bad ones giving the good ones a bad name.

    • See, these guys, these cops in the NYPD video here, these guys are the ones that earn the name PIG for cops. These bozos really look like they learned how to be cops by watching 'Training Day'. Sadly, this is becoming more the norm than aberrational. It really is too bad.

• Makes you wonder if this is going to be the new method of raising campaign cash for the DNC.

• Don't know if you saw it but this has a good summary of the nationwide problem, links to this case and one where the cops told a mom to bring cash (not a credit card or money order) for bail money then seized it because a drug dog "hit" on it and to a blistering George Will editorial.

  • You know because of the drug trade in this country, there is NOT one stinking dollar bill or bigger that does not have traces of some kind of dope on it...Maybe a new bill printed by the feds, .. this is also stupid beyond belief. You could get a drug dog to hit on the Sunday collection plate in any church because the money has been around. Asset forfeiture was suppose to be used at the time of conviction, bank accounts, vehicles, etc of CONVICTED drug dealers...somehow like everything else this shit is now off the hook....

    • 80%+ of 100 dollar bills have traces of drugs on them. The other 20% are freshly printed.

    • That's part of the point of that story, much worse is the fact they had time-stamped receipts from several ATMs.

• Fucking hick police in states like this where "Bubba's Law" is the rule give the rest of us a bad fucking name...This is one of the states that caused the whole country to go to standardized field sobriety tests for DUI. You know what their test was? They would throw a pocked full of change on the ground and tell the driver to bend over and pick up like 26 cents. Well shit if you been drinking you bend over what happens? You fall on your face and Bubba says you be under arrest for DWI....In some parts of this country there are still cowboys in patrol cars who think they are J. Edgar Hoover and they are gonna solve the biggest crime of the century. So the guy has cash..big fucking deal..if he ain't buying or transporting drugs, he is free to do whatever the fuck he likes...Damn this shit pisses me off!

  • It's too bad that it only takes a few bad cops to screw it up for all other departments. I know the greater percentage of LEO are good honest folks trying to keep above water with the levels of crime we have and the short staffing, but because of new media and the internet, these stories are popping up more often. It's a shame. I've always heard about the 'Good 'Ol Boys' to look out for when travelling through these hick states. The people in these states can be some of the nicest folks you'll meet, but a lot of their cops are corrupt.

    • Tennesee is NOT a "hick state." Despite their trying to make it look that way as hard as they can go!

• A Monterey police officer wanted to know if he was carrying any large amounts of cash. "I said, 'Around $20,000,'" he recalled. "Then, at the point, he said, 'Do you mind if I search your vehicle?' I said, 'No, I don't mind.' I certainly didn't feel I was doing anything wrong. It was my money."

  Maybe we need to start asking for lawyers at traffic stops. This is bullshit and should be unconstitutional.

  • The Law it was covered by is bullshit and IS unconstitutional. A first year law student could have told you that. And he was pulled over without probable cause: there are a lot of out of twn plates in Tennessee. Since teh stop wasillegal, the money, anything else found in the search should be fruit of the poisoned tree and not even allowed in evidence. The STATE needs to clean this mess up ASAP!
