OK King family, here's the deal...
You want to charge for the words that MLK gave freely to all mankind (words I personally find truly inspiring, both in text and the spirit in which they were spoken) then we're going to charge you rent for the space which the monument occupies on the mall.
I'd say $800,000.00 a year will do nicely.
Here is my factoid of the day. When Korean veterans wanted to build the Korean War Memorial and put it on the mall, they encountered allkinds of flack that there was no more room on the mall, that they would need to move it somewhere else, etc. Did anyone hear any conversations about not putting the King memorial in the Mall, which is mostly memorials to Presidents and War dead? (sound of crickets)
That is true the only reason he is there is because of the speech. I think that it would have been better place elsewhere and made by someone else the statue is hideous.
The following short report was in Saturday's local sports section.
"King donation: The NFL is donating $1 million to the new memorial to Martin Luther King Jr. on Washington's National Mall, trying to help the foundation behind the memorial to reach its goal of raising $120 million."
Here's an idea: How about the family donating part of the $800,000 to the Foundation? I don't think most people begrudge the King family some royalties off his words. But this reminds of a news report I heard years ago. Some people wanted to use some of King's words but balked at what they considered to be the extravagant fees the family wanted.

That is horrible. How sad that his legacy has been squandered, abused and taken apart by the corrupt and the disgusting. I am sure that in another few decades or less, King will basically be regarded as a socialist who was okay with welfare and unwed Mothers and was a fan of Margaret Sanger. It is sad that his family are not even trying to keep his legacy true and intact, they are also trying to cash in on his legacy even as it withers away.
The MLK memorial in Washington is totalitarian art, it was made in China and looks like a memorial to Chariman Mao or Kim Jong Il, the Dear Leader. King deserves better than this.
I said the thing on my fb page. The phrase I used was "Soviet Gothic" style art. The sculpture is hideous.
