Massachusetts bans school bake sales. “Bake sales, the calorie-laden standby cash-strapped classrooms, PTAs and booster clubs rely on, will be outlawed from public schools as of Aug. 1 as part of new no-nonsense nutrition standards, forcing fundraisers back to the blackboard to cook up alternative ways to raise money for kids.” No problem, substitute cooked asparagus and we’re sure nobody will notice.

  • I agree obesity is a big problem in the U.S. Bake sales are not the problem healthy eating habits begin in the home. Start by giving up your bottle of katsup!

      You got the thumb up for the first sentence, but give up ketchup? NO WAY!!! But I will say that I usually use barbecue sauce instead of ketchup on burgers, and on most other foods.

  • Is the Massachusetts government going to make up for the loss of revenue? In most schools (and other groups) bake sales are fundraisers-top pay for trips or uniforms forBand or choir, to pay for equipment for sports, to pay for things the government budget doesn't cover!

  • I'm surprised Taxachusetts didn't figure out a way to tax bake sales, which might explain why they banned them.

  • Well, why not? They've already banned common sense, sound judgement and St. Patrick's Day (it's now O'Green Day).

    • I sort of undertand the attitude toward St. Ptrick's Day and it isn't based in religion. St. Patrick's day is traditionally more Roman Catholic leaning. Hence the green color. In Ireland, throughout the troubles, ENGLISH C of E wore orange. Green Catholic, Orange English Protestant. There is even a song detailing the passing of laws making wearing green illegal, as it was a Revolutionary identity color.
