Michigan to begin tracking kids’ weight

Michigan to begin tracking children’s weight.“In an attempt to combat Michigan’s childhood obesity epidemic, Gov. Rick Snyder announced Wednesday that the state would begin tracking kids’ body mass index through the Michigan Care Improvement Registry.”Things are going so well in Michigan, they’ve got extra time to think about things like this.

  • I hate gobment intervention in anyone's personal life unless harm is evident. Kids nowdays are lazy though. In my time, I had chores to do. I had sports to play. I had plenty of things to keep me thin. Today, many kids sit on their duffs in front of a TV or PC. They eat garbage. They have no physical activities to participate in. They become marshmellows. I think this is all gubment indoctrination. I ate like a horse but I ran it all off. I ate healthy most of the time. A lot of things are missing today that kids did years ago.

    • One thing I've noticed is that not only are there a lot more fat kids these days, that what we considered "fat" back in my day (I'm 41) is now just sort of average. I was looking at a photo of my third-grade class. I remember there was one boy who was teased about being fat. The rest of us were pretty skinny. But that one boy didn't look all that fat to my eyes in 2011.

I agree that childhood obesity is becoming an ever-greater problem, but I wonder if we're attacking it from the wrong angle. PE and recess have been taken out of many schools. Changing the food is a noble endeavor, but the fact that kids nowadays have to be TOLD to get outside and play should be telling us something.

  • Seems to me that Michigan is chasing a symptom while the disease of illiterate adults remains rampant. Even the Lefty rag HuffPo has to admit that the big Blue Dot of "social services gone wild" called Detroit is functionally illiterate.

Maybe if the (union controlled) education system did their job at an acceptable level and parents were actually made to understand that parenting was their most important job, things might just begin to improve.

Fat kids are not the problem... Fatcat politicians and fat-headed parents are.

  • The dumbest part about it is using BMI as a test for obesity. The moment BMI standards were changed 15 or so years ago, the number of "obese" people instantly went up. And the more "obese" people you can pretend there are, the more government money you can get funneled to the cause. It's a joke.

  • I do not believe the State of MIchigan has any right to know my children's BMI's. This article doesnt say if we can opt out of it or not, just that its going to happen. Do we even get a choice?

I'd like to say this is the first time I disapprove of Gov. Snyder, but its not. He is a Liberal Progressive in disguise.

  • I'm always puzzled by use of the term "obesity epidemic" as if obesity was an illness like measles or chicken pox---something you catch. I think the term is used to justify government intervention, interference and control as if obesity can be controlled by government programs or, most egregiously, the "food police". Think I'm kidding? Michelle Obama has already bullied Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants into changing their menus to make them more "child friendly". This is just the beginning.

Johnny, put down that french fry!!

  • It's real easy to track the obesity rates just about anywhere. Go where there are high percentages of children accessing school lunch (and breakfast) programs. You will also find a high percentage of fat kids.

  • Wow, as broke as Michigan is, they can still afford to bully parents. Wonder how this will go over with their Giant Mooselimp population?
