Mother Jones Goes all Luddite “AI to steal all our jobs”: If artificially intelligent robots want to steal all our jobs they’re going to have to get in line behind Obama. Now if you’ll excuse us we need to go out and and bust up all the looms and printing presses before they destroy the textile and publishing industries. (Hmm this is starting to sound like a discussion from a previous post)

Look for an old sci-fi story called "With Folded Hands." It was both written and a radio episode of Dimension X. I don't know if Asimov had already coined his famous "Three Laws Of Robotics" at the time, but it is a rather chilling glimpse of the =real= consequences of First Law - particularly the second clause, that a robot =through inaction= shall not allow a human being to come to harm. Imagine a Robot Bloomberg Nanny State Dystopia.....
PS -- I've been on the neo-semi-Luddite pathway for some time now. I like my desktop computer, and laptops are handy, but I refuse to use a "smartassphone" , and I still shun GPS in favor of writing down directions off of Google map!
Productivity, as measured as the number of man hours do produce something has been dropping for more than a century. What this should have resulted in was a reduction in the work week from 40 to perhaps 32 hours or less to maintain the same national standard of living. The problem with that is that tax revenue would have dropped as well and big government would be a goner. Instead, we got jobs shipped overseas, a nanny state, a huge tax burden and two income 40 hour workers just to maintain something like the standard of living a one worker family produced in the 50s. If AI produces a large increase in productivity, then what's the problem with keeping the machines here instead of oursourcing to Chinese communists, reducing the work week and paying less taxes?
No wonder Mother Jones is pissed.
