The mother knew he was a fruitcake but she's not going to take any responsibility for him. She should've 'secured' him if the state wasn't going to.
He is an adult and has been an adult since he was diagnosed. She has no right to "secure" him. NSS are you out there? What is this, kidnapping, or imprisonment or something? At any rate, she can't confine him, she can't "make" him take his meds, and he can even refuse his meds in the hospital if he so choooses. and unless he was involuntarily commited, he can't be confined in a hospital either. Hecan walk out any time. So just what do you thnk the mother should have done?
You can only "secure" him if he is a danger to himself or others in Kalifornia. Having no prior knowledge that this OSWer was going to kill someone, there is not a hell of lot you can do. In Kalifornia you can put a hold on someone for 72 hours if they are dangerous, Mommy could have taken several steps to either commit him or medicate him but it appears that never got done and he just wandered.(reading the local take in the Oakland Tribune) She could have actually gotten a court order to force him to take meds but that is an extreme case and is usually reserved for repeat perverts only. Kalifornia likes to mainstream the mentally ill and let them walk the streets and beg for money, attack people, and generally raise hell. The liberals here believe that is wonderful and diverse. That's because they all live where the crazy people don't hang out and the rest of the everyday folks get to deal with the crazy people. In the county I work in it is not unusual to take someone in for a mental health hold, and have them "escape" because the intake person is too busy watching tv or eating cheetos. Then they call us back and report them as a missing person...They don't give a shit about anyone but themselves, they don't want to deal with the crazies and in this case mom (giving her the benefit of the doubt) didn't get any help from the local mental health folks cause they didn't either believe her or give a shit about the guy.
I used to work at the State Mental hospital here. We got the ones who had no funding, or whose funding had run out. A few were long term, but I worked in Adolescent, where the kids were brought in, medicated to a point of functionality, then pitched back out to the general public. We had lots of frequent flyers that were in and out repeatedly. The only ones with a court order for meds were the folks over in the ward for the criminally insane. As one of the staff use to tell us, "they are might medicated!"

I think I mentioned that before....I am sure that the goobermint has rules that force these institutions to have low cost internet so the crazies and play too. Just a side note. I went to lunch with a couple guys yesterday and the driver had Rush on the radio, there was a woman on the phone who was a complete moron. Her speech patterns and the things she said sounded like...You guessed it, our favorite troll. I would be willing to bet it was her, either that or she has a twin sister who gained access to the pay phone at the asylum. :)
Actually she was probably no relation at all. The Left ALL SOUND THE SAME. THey repeat nearly word for word the same drivel. Talk about groupthink! I just have that feeling when I heard it that it was her...You had to hear it...She sounded medicated and it was her word for word....
We know he was a danger to the public. He proved that. I'm sure he made verbal threats at some time or other. If he's a threat to himself or the public, off to the funny farm he goes. For how long, who knows. I'm not saying this murder could be prevented but I think more 'help' could 've been there to help him. I'm not a sociologist or psycholigist. He had no handlers making sure he wouldn't be a threat. I really don't think there is a 'right' way to have prevented this. I wished there had been. I feel Mother could've done more for his sickness. That's the point I'm trying to make.
If he is seen as a danger to himself or others he can be hospitalized against his will for a short time ( usually a few days to a couple of weeks.) Once he is on his meds again, and is no longer deemed to be a danger, he gets released, quits taking his meds and we're back to square one. Thean the brilliant folks in the 70's who decided that Mentally ill people were reasonable enough to make choices about taking their meds or not, and closed most of the long term mental facilities turning these guys loose in the general population.
Forgive my indolence, but there's a strong meme circulating for a long time that "Reagan closed down the mental health facilities".. This is often deployed in discussions of the homeless

Since Reagan wasn't President in 1963 I can hardly blame him. Kennedy comissioned the first Commission to study and make recommendation for combating mental illness in the US. The large, predominately funded mental health hospitals started closing in the late 60's, and the use of the remaining ones shifted from long term care to emergent care, aimed at stabilization and release. Many of te institutions could no loinger fund themselves, so more and more closed altogether. Illinois just closed their last facilities in Dec 2011. The idea stemmed from the very real abuse many mentally ill patients were subjected to ,and the idea that they may be healthier if not confined for years on end in a facility. Unfortunately, the law of unintended effects took over, and many patients simply lost any treatment at all, and poor treatemnt foe severe illness like schizophrenia and bipolar. In both cases the key to treatment is regular medication, and in both populations, the patients don't want to take the pills. So they don't, their disease worsens, and everyone loses.
It's more like the liberal loonies didn't want people institutionalized. Unless they just sat there and drooled on themselves they wanted them free. This is why you have a 72 hour hold in California. After that they usually le them go.
Example: We have a schizophrenic guy who's hung around my office for a couple of decades. All the cops can do is pick him up so he can get cleaned up and medicated. After 72 hours he's kicked out even though he talks to five people at a time that aren't there, can't hold a job or figure out how to get any kind of financial aid he has to be born free like Elsa the lion because he's not a danger to anyone but himself.
It's very sad. His name is Richard. He doesn't know where he's from, what his last name is, if he has any family. How he survives is beyond me. I give him money when I see him, we've chipped in and bought him sleeping bags, tents, warm clothes, food, etc., and I assume there are others about eh do the same.
This type of person I would have no problem if my tax dollars took care of. I do resent my tax dollars being spent on useless OWS types that are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves but won't get off thei asses to do anymore than say gimmes.
No. As far as I know the first OWS murder was that of a 15 year on his adopted parents in California near Oakland last month. It is a horrible situaiton.
Yes but an OWS protest wasn't in progress when that happened. That's why I called this the first one.
Well the first OWS inspired murder I suppose. The OWS pretty much had other aspects of broken commandments, murder while in the process of a protest was bound to happen.
Hi Kimmie, I'm not accusing the guy who actually did the murder of being OWS. I am blaming the lack of police response due to them being tied up with the OWS protesters for this mans death. Had the police not been pre-occupied with the occupiers they probably would have responded faster and perhaps the man would be alive.
I'm hoping the widow sues the city.
