Looks like the Tender Tampon Lady is getting more flak, she faked tears during an apology on BSNBC...
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2014/01/04/melissa-harris-perry-cries-during-air-apology-romney-family
Yeah that was lame. The comedians don't reflect the programs ideologies either that was just so stupid all around.
I bet she is getting the Bashir treatment over at MSNBC.
Racists or not, the panel was definitely a bunch of bigots. Like I told that liberal political cartoonist who drew the President as a monkey, then proceeded to explain that HE wasn't racist, just disagreed with POTUS's policies. However, conservatives only disagree with POTUS because they are Racists. Anyway, I tweeted him that that, right there, was bigoted. He actually tweeted me back that I made a good point, and he was starting to reconsider.
I love that you nailed him with that perfect distinction
Alien: I don’t think they are ridiculing the black baby, as OP stated.
Really? Singing "one of these *things* is not like the others...What *thing* do you think they were talking about if not specifically the adopted child who happens to be black. That in no way was geared toward the GOP, but only toward the child. Kimmy is correct, they see that innocent baby as nothing more than a "token" and it is shameful.
Then the other guy tries to draw a false comparison to the GOP as the GOP were the first to embrace blacks into their party and had black republicans holding office long before the civil rights era. Blacks being overwhelmingly democrat rather than republican is a *relatively* recent phenomenon, yet this schmuck acts as if that is how it has always been. He was doing nothing more than perpetuating the same leftist lies in a blatant attempt to keep the races divided, because in his mind, blacks don't belong on the right and if they are there then they are "token" blacks or self hating blacks.
It is this same garbage, repeated over and over by the left, that keep many black conservatives/republicans "in the closet" much like gays used to be "in the closet" to avoid the ridicule, mockery, and generalized shame that wasn't/isn't their shame to begin with. The whole point was and is to keep blacks in line and send a message that if you are black and conservative/republican then keep it to yourself/ hide it. It is disgusting that they would use that child as a springboard to fulfill such a purpose.
See, now you did it. You went and pissed me off and I wrote a freakin' book.
By all means, get it out DRB. But i don't think anger is all that good for the soul, and I certainly ain't worth any damage to either your soul or heart..
I'm trying to be very specific about this. MHP said the baby is gorgeous. I think she's off the hook for any charges of racism here. Panel got stupid (even comparing to a GOP convention). I think KQ is spot on about how you hit back on this issue. The humor from panel's side is predicated on the notion that conservatives/GOP cannot possibly have pure motives behind adoption of a black baby, because conservatives/GOP are all racist. Maybe Mormonism adds another layer for them, i dunno.
Like OP stated, if it was a good Democrat white family, there'd be nothing suspect at all. That means its OK for some white families to adopt outside of race.
So, lets imagine Hitler sagely followed Rommel's advice, sought a political solution, and the Nazi Party somehow endured in post-war Germany. Then, one of Goebbel's children later on happens to adopt a Jewish baby. Everyone assumes the Nazi family is trying to prop up a lie, and mocks this action. That's not ridiculing the Jewish baby.
MSNBC & Co is ridiculing the Romney family's decision to adopt, because they assume the familly's trying to provide cover for a simmering racism, which I don't think exists there.
Alien: By all means, get it out DRB. But i don’t think anger is all that good for the soul, and I certainly ain’t worth any damage to either your soul or heart..
Are you patronizing me? I certainly hope not. I don't think you really want to go there.
A: I’m trying to be very specific about this. MHP said the baby is gorgeous. I think she’s off the hook for any charges of racism here. Panel got stupid (even comparing to a GOP convention).
Saying a baby is gorgeous isn't good enough to get her off the hook. She was an accomplice in it fully, and unabashedly. She did absolutely nothing to try and reign it in. MHP was in charge of the segment, she chose the pictures, she introduced this picture as controversial, she allowed the panel free range with their comments, laughed along with them, encouraged it, even added to it, as if having North West as a granddaughter-in-law and Kanye West as an extended family member would somehow add to the Romney's torment of now having blacks in the family. Yes, she most certainly did imply that very thought. Saying a baby is gorgeous and somehow thinking that will make everything else OK just doesn't cut it.
I agree. Her intentions were clear. If we want to argue that it wasn't racist it was DEFINITELY racial and it shouldnt be minimized.
No i'm not patronizing you, but I am done with you for the day. Enjoy your freedom from Alien
right...
"That’s not ridiculing the Jewish baby. "
Yes and no. It may not be "ridicule" in the humorous sense, but IMO, racial jokes aren't long on humor anyway. Even in this example, the ethnicity of the baby would have been front and center. I cannot see how picking on a family for racial reasons somehow excludes the member of the family in question from the remarks.
Sure, it's a baby -- but how fair is it to bring that up? The baby had no choice in the matter. Further, I find the "gorgeous" remark to be appalling -- if it was an ugly baby, would that make it any better?
I find that her remark that he is gorgeous was a mask to try to undermine what she was doing. Kind like saying: "I don't hate Jews because my accountant is a Jew and I like my accountant."
I suppose I might agree, in the sense that the family's adoption decision is the target, and the baby is somehow subject to collateral damage? Though I don't understand the mechanics of the splash/area effect, in this case.
I really don't see the problem with calling the baby gorgeous.. unless one is asserting that she somehow believes black babies are better looking then white babies. I think the baby's adorable, especially how the little girl to her left is basically cheek-to-cheek. Obviously lots of love there.. What's wrong with my observing that?
I just find MHP's finding the baby gorgeous to be one of those remarks where people say awful things, and then say something that supposedly is a compliment as a fig leaf: "But I *said* it was an adorable baby!" Not entirely unlike the PHB's job recommendation for Dilbert: "For a man of his personal hygiene, he doesn't steal as much as you'd think."
*His* left, and who ever said a "token" can't be gorgeous. That's what you seem to be missing.
OK I lied.. guess I wasn't done with you. And that was shitty of me to say.
What I mean is the little white girl (her), cheek-to-cheek on the left of her in the photo.
Ok... yeah, NOW its clear. I thought baby was a little girl. And I thought you were referring to Mitt's left lap for a moment there. LOL. Is Kieran not wearing pink? I am some kind of gender-pink bigot, i guess.
I thought I was pretty clear that I agree they are viewing the baby as a token in other comments. Some of them probably wish they could take custody
A:OK I lied.. guess I wasn’t done with you. And that was shitty of me to say.
Is that an apology? :) accepted...
and no Kieran is not wearing pink. It's red and white check, which from a distance can look pink.
A: Some of them probably wish they could take custody
Yes, that is another point of it. There are many who think that whites shouldn't be allowed to adopt black children simply because in their minds white people cannot teach black children how to "be black". (as if there is a right and wrong way to be black) I have a cousin who was adopted and she happens to be black. We heard this a lot. She was repeatedly told she wasn't "black enough." Why? Because of how she spoke, how she dressed, even how she ate. To them whites aren't fit and proper parents for black children simply because they are white.
...and a very good book it is, too!
She said the baby was the "most gorgeous".. is that the raaacism?
She joked that it would be funny if the Romney kid would marry Kanye West's kid someday.. i'm no fan, and wouldn't want my kids associated with him..
I missed the overt racism. I dread tripping over molehills
You might not see the racism in making fun of an infant's color (sorry, but that's what they were doing after all) but Melissa Harris-Perry has apologized, so...
"Without reservation or qualification, I apologize to the Romney family and to all families built on loving transracial adoptions."
http://www.msnbc.com/melissa-harris-perry/apology-melissa-harris-perry
#MHPApology. Now discuss me, peons!
More like:
#MHPApology. Oh shit, I got caught letting my real feelings out in public.
One of the "comedians" sang: One of these things is not like the other... The other comedian make a "joke" about how the ONE Black kid is a representation of the GOP conventions where you find the ONE Black person. Meaning that the Black Child is a TOKEN in the Romney family just like Black Republicans are TOKENS in the Republican Party. Her attitude was racial as well because she was mocking the family for adopting the child and minimize the child's personhood. So yes there was implied and overt racial and racist comments made on this segment. EVERYTHING was about the fact that the child was Black, that is the ONLY reason this entire segment happened. Do you think that if the child was white yet adopted they would have even bothered?
As CO2 stated, if Chelsea Clinton or some other liberal person had adopted the Black child do you think they would have made this segment? This was about stating that Republicans are racists, that the Romney family do not love this child that they are using this child as a token for political purposes... how disgusting! This was hateful I am not sure how you can't see all of that...
I do believe I agree with your last paragraph, KQ (edit: and that's where you hit them, over and over). I don't think they are ridiculing the black baby, as OP stated. And the entire segment included shots at FLOTUS' bangs and Obama and other famous pics from the year (i.e. its more then just the video that was included here)
However, its clear some are making fun of the decision a huge, wealthy white GOP family made, based on the narrative that GOP must be raacist. The incongruity strikes them as comedic. And its as dumb as those making fun of Angelina Jolie.
I think THAT is bigoted--bigoted against the GOP, despite the fact that the GOP is overwhelmingly white, and even though there are racists of every stripe, race, party, and ethnic origin in this country.
But that's NOT the same as everyone calling Melissa Harris-Perry an actual racist. At least from that video, that charge does not compute (I'm seeing that on Twitter, etc..).
One can make the case that by her attitude she is making a statement that a white family cannot love and care for a Black child on the basis of wanting to love and care for the Black child with no ulterior or insidious motives. That is racist against the white family. Believing that a white family cannot care for a black child the same that a black family can care for a black child is racist if not at least racial and still wrong. By making a statement that in essence the Black child is a token, it robs the child of his personhood which is what racism is essentially about... robbing people of their personhood. The child is a thing that doesn't belong... that is disgusting and the child doesn't belong because the child is Black! That's racist...
Melissa herself showcased her racism against the Romney's as well as her bigoted beliefs against the GOP in general. She also belittled the baby by her North West quip. This entire segment was racist but at the very least racial in nature.
But do you really think it was a statement against all White families? If so, yeah, that's be racist against whites.
But I think its tailored specifically to serve the narrative (as Perlcat also states) that conservatives or GOP are racist.. probably especially so if they are Mormon. So its just those racist white families that can't be trusted
Since its not (in my view) a blanket assault against all whites--Chelsea Clinton could get away with it, after all--it strikes me as political bigotry, not racism.
And its just as awful.
I wouldn't minimize the fact that this was racist/racial demonstration just because she would show her racist/racial tendencies towards white REPUBLICAN families only. I don't know her personally so she may have issues against adoptions of minority children by White families. Did she or her crew with her blessing were dismissive of Angelina Jolie and her adoption of minority children? If she was or was okay with her guest being so, then yes one can make the case that the woman has a serious problem. However if she expresses her hatred of white (and black) republicans she is politically biased but also racist in my opinion.
With that said, like I said earlier, this entire demonstration was about stating that GOP people are racists and that they use Black people as tokens. Even though politically bigoted I can still contend that this was racist/racial in tone. Black people who are Republicans are tokens so they are not "people" worth of respect.
I have several problems with what they did in a racial context. If we are valuing people solely on the content of their character, then the "one of these things is not like the other" song is at best singling a child out for the color of its skin. At the core of it, though, is the liberal "we're not racists because we're liberals" bit. Kind of like Biden's crack about Barry's being "clean, articulate, bright", it just drips with condescension for both a child and entire segments of society.
I think some things are truly "off-limits", and for good reason. I certainly don't yearn for the kind of talk that was common in the past. It *was* disrespectful, and it *was* dehumanizing, and having it off limits is fine by me.
It's irritating when I see someone like this twit pulling something like this when there ain't no way in hell they'd let an even more innocuous verbal mis-step like saying "you people" in an ambiguous context go unchallenged. I seem to recall a politician getting in serious hot water when he referred to a collective group that way, and the liberal media fired up their outrage machine as a consequence.
If there is one set of rules to go by, then the task of avoiding racial slurs is do-able. We conservatives are well aware ManureSpreaderNBC's game is rigged so there is only one rule: "Conservatives lose." The best answer to that is often to simply not play -- but to retreat from society simply because a different group is hateful and intolerant of your beliefs is a form of assisted cultural suicide.
Their argument is implicit: "As a liberal, I *can't* be racist, because I have an expanded world-view." (or some such self-serving BS). By elimination, a conservative is by their definition racist, because they aren't a liberal.
My personal rule for racial/offensive talk in the media is quite simple. I imagine the reaction out of the Left if it was a conservative who said that, and if they'd have blown up over it, I consider it fair game. My sole intention is to hold them to the same standard they'd hold me to. If they squeal, I just ask them about how they handled it the last time a conservative did it. There would never be a problem if they'd hold themselves to the same standard they hold others to.
Given that they have made great profit in the past making the same molehills into mountains, there's no reason I should have to let it slide. I'm happy to give the benefit of the doubt to ambiguous circumstances, but when it's a hypocrite speaking, I'm just as happy to point out their inconsistencies for the world to see.
My eye fell upon that child immediately, because of color. We know the brain processes color differences in groups of objects more quickly then most other traits. I don't think that makes me racist to observe this.
The sing-song that the panel blurted out just reflected this fact, and its compounded by the bigoted notion that ALL GOP must be racist, which KQ very succinctly stated. They didn't say it because they are racist. They said it because they believe racists adopted black baby for cover.
Don't replace a perfectly usable Bigot Card with a bad Race Card..
True, but with one small caveat. They are happily bigoted towards the GOP -- they don't see the problem (or the irony) in it. In fact, it serves the narrative they are trying to establish very well. Here's how the conversation would go:
Perlcat: "That's bigotry, plain and simple."
MSNBC: "It's OK, because since you're GOP, you're racist. QED."
Perlcat: "That makes no sense. I know lots of conservatives that are not racist."
MSNBC: "No True Scotsman. (http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/No_True_Scotsman)"
Perlcat: "..."
They are using basic disinformation tactics to discredit and dehumanize. If they aren't called upon it using terms *they* understand and use every day, they will eventually win over enough of the ignorant and outright stupid to make a difference in a bad way for this country.
You mean to say they'd assert that no true conservative could not be racist?
I really think you could press them on that and win the point. I'm currently arguing the same to some effect in the shitshow of internetz
The far more difficult point to win would be charging Harris-Perry as a racist, due to this incident.. I'm not calling out any specific arguments on this page. Its all over Twitter that's she's now undeniably a racist. Its dumb and inartful, and is so easily slapped down from multiple angles (including the fact that she's biracial, I believe)
I just want people to up their game..
"no true conservative could not be racist" -- Precisely.
I do think that calling people racist is a very slippery slope. There's a very good reason the ADL pushes hard to not allow anti-semitic terms to be overused. When those terms are over-used, they lose their shock value -- once the horror is lost, we're calling each other horrid things for minor infractions. Once the term "racist" has lost it's shock value, however, the likes of Al not-so-sharpton will lose a very lucrative living feeding off of it. I'm having a hard time seeing that as a negative.
Do I think Tampax Girl is racist in the classic sense? Heck no. I think she's a crass opportunist, and makes her own very good living running with the memes the Left knows and loves. It's like any other small group -- if all your buddies are doing it, then it becomes easier to mentally justify doing what you know is wrong. Throw their bigotry towards the right into the mix, and it is a recipe for disaster for a news organization -- the train wreck that is ManureSpreaderNBC is going to be humor fodder for years. Not the image your average newsroom should be shooting for. Fox News may or may not be unbiased, but at least they make a pretense of it.
If any person or persons is to actually be held responsible, it would be the executive decision-makers at MSNBC. They're the ones that ought to be held accountable for the tenor of their organization. They've had several problems with this in the recent past -- to the point where they have no one who can realistically represent any point of view other than the ones they so blatantly push.
On a side note: I refuse to take a person's race into account in determining whether or not they are or can be racist. Doesn't matter if they're half-white, half-black, or just half-wit. Melanin content or the absence thereof does not somehow magically make unacceptable behavior acceptable. It make make it *explainable*, and in certain circumstances, *understandable*, but never acceptable.
Once we go down that slippery slope, at what percentage will we say it's "OK" for a person to use, for example, the N word? 50%? 37.5%? 31.25%? It gets stupid, if you ask me -- much like the old "one drop" rule. If we jump to the societal aspect, it just gets even more ridiculous. Are we really going to get to where we say "Macklemore can use it, but Bieber can't?" Preposterous on the face of it.
"My sole intention is to hold them to the same standard they’d hold me to."
Haven't you heard? That's racist! :P
The Tender Tampon lady is backtracking big time..tweeting apologies but too yellow to talk with the Romney family directly....wonder is she gets put on paid admin leave now? I doubt it.

With her own custom "hathtag" to show us it's sincere.
"hathtag"...LOL!!
HMMMM, interesting!
The video shows up on Breitbart.com and suddenly.........

VERY curious!
Like criminals covering their tracks.
Go to YouTube and search "msnbc romney grandson" to get other videos. I have a download feature that permitted me to save another version posted- just in case that gets pulled.
That child and all those children will be a thousand times better off raised by the Romney's than they would be if raised by the Harris-Perry bigot.
Remember, the lefties throw the race card because it's all they have. They are completely and utterly intellectually bankrupt.
Such compassionate, caring liberal douche bags.
Coming on leftist denounce this "white privilege". It's time for the justice brothers to demand an investigation as to why msnbc has allowed these two to remain employed. Charlatan and jack ass should be speaking up for this child's rights and for the haters to face some sort of retribution.
Yet all is well in the land of the looney lefty. You see a white republican religious family adopted this child. So all is fair. The child's well being be damned.
It use to be"it's for the children" according to Jocelyn Elders and many more on the left. Now it's not for the children if they may receive love and support from"some cracker" Seventh Day Adventist.
Ahhh, the hypocrisy of the left displayed for all to see....
Nothing new about that, of course. :(
