Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages.   • Building Permit!

    I recently applied for a building permit for a new house. It was going to
    be 100 ft tall and 400 ft wide, with 9 gun turrets at various heights, and windows
    all over the place and a loud outside entertainment sound system.
    It would have parked 200 cars, and I was going to paint it snot green with pink trim.

    The City Council told me; Forget it...AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!

    So I sent in the application again, but this time I called it a 'Mosque'.

    Work starts on Monday.

    I love this country. It's the Government I'm afraid of...

  • I believe that The Shah, Mubarak, Saddam, Gadhaffi, Assad, etc, knew that the population of their countries is basically nuts. Maybe not all, but for sure 99%. They also understood that the only way to have any sense of order is to rule with a complete iron fist and total brutality. Horrible you say? The alternative where it appears no one is in charge seems worse. So you have a. dictatorship or b. total chaos. Unfortunately there doesnt seem to be a choice c. This will continue until another brutal dictator is able to get in charge. Then they are right back to square one. We (the civilized world) need to learn that this is the culture and has been going on for thousands of years. Asskissing and pandering by Obama and Hillary is not going to change that and it appears to have made things worse.

    • I am not sure the Shah belongs on that list. He at least had an open country, didn't behead people for not being Muslim enough and had a good relationship with the West. HE got thrown out by the psycho bitch Khomeni and that's when the real trouble started. THe only reasopn the Middle East hasoil to sell us is because we (American companies) built the infrastructure and trained their people. Other wise, it would still be sitting underground and they would still be living in tents.

  • Look: the government the treaty was signed with no longer exists, so the treaty is defunct. It would have to be re-negotiated, signed and ratified, and in the meantime no $1 billion dollar bribes can be sent.

    • I don't know that anything much we could've done would've made a difference; some, perhaps most, things are beyond our control. That's not the point. The issue is do we want leadership who go into things with visions of unicorns in their heads, somehow imagining that kissing the ass of some group that we perceive as having "wronged" is going to fix everything and we'll all live happily ever after, or do we want leadership that understands its limitations, has a realistic view of the situation, does the best it can, figures the rational probabilities of positive outcomes and comes up with a plan for what they will try to do in the inevitable event of failure?

      Obama and his merry band of idiots are the former, and the MSM is now heartbroken to find out that hope is not a method. I won't say GW Bush's administration did not suffer from its own delusions, but I would say they were a damn sight closer to the latter than the hopeandchange crew. What will a Romney admin be? From his record in business, I suspect more of the latter.

        As to your other point, I don't buy into the notion that all we're doing is kissing islamist ass. We kill Al Qaida routinely. Unless "kiss ass" is drone-pilot euphemism for putting a warhead up someone's tailpipe (boom! ..and smeear)

        The practical thing to do is to identify allies and separate them from enemies. The dead ambassador in Libya had lots of local support. They will assist us in executing justice. Libyans died trying to defend the consulate. We didn't turn down allies in the Sunni Triangle either

        • I must disagree Alien. We have a schitzo type foreign policy now in the middle east where we kill the non-official government extreme elements of the Muslim radicals and at the same time totally appease the government's made up of the same people, supporting the same groups. We had allies like Mubarak, who, while not ideal by any means, were not openly hostile and kept these radical elements in check. The Obama change has brought us to a lesser position. Look at what we have now!!!
          Obama is a leftist fool and knave who doesn't understand the power politics required in these areas. These folks do not respect the weakness the Obama administration projects.

          • But Mubarak was a brutal dictator and he tortured his citizens. So when the citizenship rose up, we backed them. Clearly they are NOT taught gratitude along with their bomb making skills. I just find it interesting that we supported the uprising in Egypt. We supported the uprising in Libya ( Mohmar had been on our radar for decades) but the Syrians are doing the exact same thing, for the exact same reasons, and we won't give them a fare-thee-well. Why the inconsistency?

          • It makes no difference to a Muslim that you help him, the only thing that counts is whether or not you are infidel.

            I'd at least like to hear someone suggest we evac the children before nuking Mecca. May not be practical, but neither is nuking children. But 99% of children--everywhere--are redeemable, so I prefer that moral outcome. Back in Chandler we had Mormon, Hindu, and Muslim neighbors, and all of them were sweet kids with whom mine played. Not a terrorist amongst them

          • You may say that the children were so sweet, yada, yada, yada, however, in Iran (for fact) the children are taught FROM birth to hate Americans. And this is true in most of the islamist countries (capitalization omitted purposely)

            And while I agree that the children are the future, etc, the muslims are the ones who train their children to hate from birth. We can chant the mantra all we want about hate not being in the womb, but in these countries the children start learning it the minute they are out in the world.

            There are no rules in war. Period. The terrorists understand this. The terrorists see no problem with using children to kill children.

            The muslim faith doesn't need surgery, it needs full blown chemoradiation therapy to anihilate it. That the blood of our innocents has been shed for these troglodytes is disgraceful.

            We need to pull out, and bring our people home. Then negotiate with power and might on our side. THAT is the only thing that muslim cowards understand. THE ONLY THING.

    • Pretty simple, we could let their military know that they needed to do what needed to be done or we'd pull their aide and replaced Mubarak with one of their generals if need be. So what if one set of nuts surrounded another set of nuts?

      • Swapping in one strongman for another is certainly an option. It can stabilize a situation for a few more years. It can backfire. I don't know that it generates outcomes any more predictable then letting a popular uprising take hold

        • That is pretty much what happened with Sadaam. Let's face it, people lie. And will do anythingto get more influence and power than the guy next to them. All over the planet they tell us what we want to hear, then we are surprised when they betray us. WAKE UP PEOPLE!

        • A few more years is the only realistic alternative unfortunately. The only permanent and predictable option is one that no one here is willing to discuss let alone implement.

  • He's sees the handwriting on the wall for NBC. This guy's dusting up his resume to apply over at FOX News or The Blaze TV.

  • Maybe the wall is starting to finally crack. Maybe some of these collaborators will at least hold back from endorsing a second term.
