    • Never made me puke, but Lord, was I confused! Watched it as a desperation move at a midnight movie-we had already seen everything else we were at all interested in, and some dork from the theatre recommended Eraserhead. Weird, weird movie. It is my go-to example of a movie that made no sense and was not worth even the discounted admission price we paid. ($2.00 I think)

• What will matter with Newt is whether or not any of this type of behavior is current. He married his current wife in 2000 and converted to Catholicism in 2009. He says he's a 68-year-old grandfather and a changed man. They're not going to be able to get anywhere with this stuff as long as it's in the distant past. It's funny how all the Clinton apologists from the 90s are now big on moral failings. Hypocrites! As regards the comments at the top of this thread: Obama's personal struggles, probably stemming from father starvation, seem even more explosive and potentially destroying of his career than those of Cain, Gingrich, and even Clinton.

    IMO, BHO is a very angry guy and it shows. You don't need to be Freud to see the transference of his anger from his parents toward political enemies real and imagined (chronic use of straw men) and our economic system that he denounces as "unfair".

      • Erik, perceived or actual rejection/abandonment by a mother or father is not just an Oprah issue, it can be the conflict that wrecks entire nations. Hitler hated his stern, loveless father. The Jews seemed to be father substitutes for him. Though Hitler's Catholicism was nominal at the beginning of his life, he loved to have priests killed on feast days of the Church. Were these priests more father substitutes? Stalin had a drunken father who beat him and his mother. He was also merciless towards religious figures whom he seemed to take his anger out on as substitutes for his father. Many of the monsters causing bloody violence in America's inner cities are enraged fatherless boys. Obama had the type of childhood which is typical in many who turn into tyrants given the perfect storm. There have been threads on here in the past few months in which Jesse Jackson, Jr. and the North Carolina Governor seemed to have thought that maybe Obama should suspend democracy and just force things. Obama's use of czars is already a troubling signal in my opinion.

        • I think that debating Barry on substance (or lack thereof) is a much better topic. How he may or may not have grown up really doesn't help -- a lot of people here have had profoundly f*cked up childhoods -- to say that they are not qualified to lead based upon that leaves me to wonder who the hell is.

          I'd also like to avoid invoking Godwin's as much as possible. We haven't sunk so far as a nation as that (yet) and the whole purpose is to see that we don't.

          I think it is equally useful to examine where someone comes from. Obama just didn't spring up at the 2004 Convention. He has a past (as murky as it may be) and I believe that past shaped him and made him who he is today.

          Point is, it provides insight and explanation of how we got here, and what's in his head, but is not a deal-killer. The deal-killer's the policies and legislation he is pushing -- and I don't need to know his momma was a freak to not like them.

  Newt has never denied his issues. If you don't like them, don't vote for him. If you feel his personal life does not affect his functioning in the office for which he is running, then vote for him.

  • Compared the Newt's other wives, she's Miss America! Callista Gingrich looks like she's from Star Trek, Star Wars, or Spaceballs; her shellacked football helmet head (vice armadillo) is freakish in the xtreme.
    I'll admit this hussy looks like Harold Ramis with knockers, but, what the hell, it's the best lard-gut Gringrich could do.

        I agree -- up to a point.

        It depends upon the role the presidential spouse takes upon herself. If she has some kind of socially relevant work, then she gets whatever commentary is due someone of high stature in that perspective. For example, if she pursues ideals and goals, driving people to be better, then I think that's just great. If she promotes a charity, then as long as the charity is legitimate, then it is perfectly laudable. If she promotes an ever larger role for the state to interfere in our lives or other political behavior, then I have a problem, especially if she is posited to us as a form of ersatz president, speaking from a position of actual power. At that point, I figure that she is willingly taking on this role, and should expect to be controversial.

        Any chairperson of a charity, as an example, has a level of public notoriety. However, the wife of the president brings much greater notoriety to it -- which is often the reason they choose (or are requested) to take on some of these roles in charities.

        This is how the laws work regarding celebrities. Rude or uncomplimentary commentary about an average person can be beyond the pale, is definitely not proper form, and can be actionable in court. Movie stars and other celebrities are viewed in the courts as having willingly taken upon the additional attention that comes with the role, and should expect and deal with the problems that come with it without the same level of social or legal protections. They did not have the celebrity status thrust upon them - they could choose to retire from public life at any point. Likewise, if a president's wife chooses to retire from the public eye after seeing unwanted negative attention, then her wishes should be respected -- up to a point, depending upon the harm done. i.e. If someone sets my house on fire, and then says they've found Jesus, they're still going to jail.

        If she simply wishes to maintain her privacy from the beginning, I completely agree that she is *completely* off limits. However, in today's world, that's just not realistic for the modern president's wife -- the temptation to have her at least campaign for hubby is apparently way too strong.
