Actually (knowing a little about this) Walmart has a company policy NOT to go after shop lifters if it is below a certain dollar amount. Last time I talked with a store employee it was about $100 dollars. They do it and pass the cost on to you and I. They now figure it is part of the cost of doing business, and very few court cases get prosecuted, plus there are lawyers everywhere who will sue because of race, obesity, mental retardation, and just because it is a big company with deep pockets, and these companies (and I mean the majority of big corporations) will PAY to make someone just go away. It is a bigger scam than those assholes who sue for ADA violations and make a living at it. There are lawyers who make their living just suing Walmart...
Tort Reform should have happened about 20 years ago and it is what happens when liberal lawyers become politicians. Hell in Kalifornia, why even bother with an arrest. They treat it like a traffic ticket now that the IDIOT voters passed a proposition to downgrade a lot of property crimes From Felonies to misdemeanors or infractions. They did it because we were mean and put too many people in prison. F*cking leftards are the first to complain when one of these former inmates steals their shit.
Yeah, I worked 3rd shift at Walmart for 16 weeks last spring. We were trained to not interfere and just watch and report anything suspicious to asset protection. They certainly weren't paying me enough to do anything else.
This is what happens to every large organization: eventually, the bureaucrats are running the operation instead of the people who know the business. Every time GM or Ford puts a "finance" guy into the CEO spot instead of a car guy, I groan. This is what's wrong with government, and this is what's wrong with large corporations: the bureaucrats eventually rise to the top like scum on a stagnant pond.
That and too many upper level "managers" got to their positions not through ability and performance but by kissing the right asses often and passionately. That's why a lot of companies go down the tubes.
Or, they keep getting promoted because they're too incompetent to do the job they're in.
They are afraid that the night manager or his family will sue if something happens to him by him doing his job to protect property belonging to his employer... so... yes shoplifters can shoplift at ease because at the end of the fiscal year they will make account for the items lost at their stores and jack up prices however slightly and/or lower wages however slightly and/or fire people and/or hire more part time for less money. That is easier to do than pay possibly hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars in a lawsuit.
Now... what they CAN or SHOULD do is to make ALL employees READ, UNDERSTAND AND SIGN a paper that explains that they are under NO OBLIGATION to protect property belonging to Walmart from shoplifters, looters, natural disasters or other inconvenient events or situations. HOWEVER if they can SAFELY protect property from such people or events or situations to do so, BUT they indemnify Walmart all of their subsidiaries, fellow co-workers, and management (etc) from any bodily harm (and/or mental) that may come from their own actions. They are taking a personal risk that if does conclude in any type of harm or even death, Walmart is not responsible for the employee is not under ANY obligation to protect such property at any time. That this is discussed with the employees family and community and that Walmart is under no obligation to pay family and communities of the employee for any harm whatsoever or death.
Now they can award gifts, cash or even a promotion or hike in pay to any employee that does take the risk and survives or provide however small for the immediate family as a gesture of gratitude if it didn't work out so well for the employee. However the employee took his own life into his own hands and Walmart cannot and should not be sued or else the suit goes away promptly.
That is how this gets resolved. Not just Walmart but any business. That way consumers don't have to feel the pinch because of shoplifters (at least not a lot), they can hire people that have loyalty and may do something. All in all I feel that businesses are not thinking straight and that is to their own detriment and why government feels it can come in and make decisions.
I think they're even more concerned about the criminal suing because he might have got his knees skinned when the employee took him down. Which is a sad commentary on our courts.
Those lawsuits are ludicrous and they shouldn't go forward.
This is why I am sure many homeowners choose to shoot to kill invaders and wait a bit before calling for help.
When a jury gave a woman a couple of million because she was burned by McDonald's coffee when SHE spilled it on herself, I figured we were officially out of control.
I think somewhere along the line we have all been tele-transported to Bizarro World without our knowledge. We definitely have a Bizarro world president....and it would appear that the rest of society is following suit.

My daughter has been a managrr at 2 different retail outlets. She also was trained to let them go. It used to drive her crazy.
Stores should put of a sign, "Help Yourself"

This manager would have faced discipline if the losses were too high. Leave it to the lawyers to f**k things up. Now a good employee who took his job seriously is now unemployed and will struggle to find something that is equivalent to what he was making at Walmart. This is one of the reasons that I don't do business with them.
