NY Times raises daily price to $2.50

NY Times increases daily price from $2 to $2.50. A 25% increase. It’s justified – nowadays the 1% no longer can dispose of excess cash by lighting cigars with it.

Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

  • At my ultra liberal college they have, at least they had until a year ago, stands with the NYT free for the taking. Hey, aren't students are there for liberal brainwashing? But anyway, the stands were always full. Looked to me like nobody was even taking the POS when it was free. I know I never took one.

    • I would have taken one just for the crossword puzzle.

      Actually, if they raised the price to $25, and everyone that buys it now kept buying it, they would still be losing money! Ad revenue is what pays for a paper, not sales.

  • NYT boardroom discussion.

    "Circulation is down, advertising revenue is down, we're losing money. What to do? Hey, let's raise our price 25%! Yeah, that's the ticket! Problem solved! Thanks for the suggestion Krugman."

    • That's what happens when you have an Economic Genuis* like Krugman on staff. At least they're taxing only the people that can afford it.

      * -- spelling error intentional.

  • This is like the Captain of the Titanic saying to the passengers, you need to pay more for the privilege of hitting an iceberg, right before you go under.

    That's the cost of a couple rolls of toilet paper, and it reads the same.

  • Makes perfect sense. Whenever I have trouble selling something archaic and unpopular I always raise the price. Works like a charm. Sheesh!

    Time to go away, NY Times!

    • Here the problem the NYTimes has, you can't bullsh!t a bullsh!tter. America knows BS when they see/read/hear it, & the NYTimes is considered BS everywhere outside of the "elite" Beltway/Manhattan/New England bubble.

  • They came up with an alternate pricing system, where readers would pay 5 cents per fact, but they quickly realized they'd go broke in twenty minutes.
