NYC’s ridiculously high cigarette tax can’t be ignored after Eric Garner’s death. So who wanted this tax? Why Mayor Nanny Bloomberg of course.

$85 for a carton. Dayam!
They just raised the price of my Korean Coughin' Nails here in NC a buck to $29/carton, but I put them on my EBT card as a "leafy green vegetable" so it's a wash.
Here in my neck of the frozen north, 200 legal smokes cost $85.
200 contraband Indian smokes costs $15.
Yeah the Indian smokes suck, but nearly not as much as paying $85 for a carton of legal smokes.
Sometimes I wish I was still going to sea (merchant marine). Once we left the States, the "slop chest" would open and we got cigs for tax-free. Last time I sailed a carton of the good ones cost under $15, while at home in Mass. they were pushing 4 or 5 bucks a pack.
Back in the day when I smoked my grandmother would get me cigs from the PX for like $3-4-5 per carton. They were dirt cheap. I had a friend in the Navy who'd grab some for me, too.
The cigarette tax creates the black market and in turn causes otherwise law abiding people to be criminals. The cops killed Garner the way a gun does. They are both tools used by an operator. This is big government and almost half the country thinks they want more of it.
Garner wasn't killed by a cop, he was killed by Big Macs, laziness, and his own refusal to stop breaking the law. He had been arrested 31 times before, and never learned the lesson that he was doing something wrong.
