Obama calls Camden symbol of promise for the nation

• When I saw the headline, I was hoping that he was talking about some other Camden, but I knew better. Why? Because Barky is so clueless about how an economy works, and how to determine what is promising, that there was no other place he could have been talking about.
  I grew up in NJ, born and raised there. I'm pushing 56 and can't remember a time when Camden was worthwhile.

• Not surprising at all that Obmana would completely miss the economic realities.

  Just like most of the NE and Midwest US, the cities are old, former manufacturing centers. Decades of socialism, taxation, and changing times have seen the manufacturing leave. Nothing replaced it. For the most part.

  We have several of those in NJ - Newark, Paterson, Jersey City, & Camden. Parts of Newark have not yet recovered from the '67 riots, but there has also been a lot of recovery. Paterson has turned into Marseilles, USA - Patersonistan. Jersey City, now pretty much the sixth Borough of NYC, has seen a housing boom. Trump built a residential tower in downtown - that should tell you something. Meanwhile, Camden is completely third world. And there are some third world countries that would be offended by that comparison.

  The difference between Camden and Jersey City/Newark lies in the difference between Philadelphia and New York. Philly is a large city, but not in huge demand. Housing is cheap, commercial space is relatively cheap. New York is a very high demand city - housing is ridiculously expensive, commercial space is also. Downtown Jersey City is a short train ride away. Didn't take long for people to discover it as a cheaper alternative to NYC.

  Camden doesn't have that. There is no reason to not be in Philly, if that is where you choose to be. So Camden remains a wasteland.

  Obmana can promise all he wants. Maybe Camden is the most promising city from the viewpoint that there is nothing worse than Camden (save maybe East St. Louis - similar geography), so you can only go up from there. But until the simple economic realities change, Camden won't be going anywhere. If no one wants to go there, there really isn't anything you can do to stop them.

    He means what he says most of the time. We decent and civilized people just think he at best joking and at worst saying something very stupid. Ignore what he says at you peril, he lives to troll..ah err agitate...er organize.

      He said he was going to (try to) fundamentally change the USA. Indeed he did... he didn't lie. The fact that fools didn't see him for what he was is just that... they were/are fools but he certainly didn't lie in his desire to change the country. From gay marriage to Islam being on the march and increases in taxation and many other things... indeed he did.

• I don't know what Skittle crapping unicorn populated fairyland he lives in but if he thinks Camden is a success story, I would hate to see a failure. A couple of years ago, the last grocery store closed there and it wasn't until late last year that another one opened.

  Camden has been a sh!thole for decades and it's not getting better any time soon. I remember some years back there was talk of moving the 76ers across the river there and I just laughed at the idea. I used to live not far from Trenton back in the 90s and that was bad enough but even then it was minor league compared to Camden. I wouldn't set foot in either one without a bullet proof vest and firearm.
