Obama says Senate immigration bill requires that illegals learn English. It doesn’t. They get legalized as “Registered Provisional Immigrants” first, then they get to renew the status (still no English) six years later, then comes step three twelve years down the line where they merely show they’re “enrolled” in an English class. So the debate continues: is our president clueless or an inveterate liar?

Does this mean Wal Mart is going to have to pay for English lessons for thousands of employees? Here in the southwest if you can't understand Spanish WallyWorld will not hire you as a checker or to work the floor. Because of this stupid policy I see a lot of people working there that don't understand English worth a damn. It pisses me off so bad I pull the wetback stunt in reverse when I have to shop there, no comprende espanol!
Same here in San Antonio. But we aren't talking just Wally World. We are talking Nursing positions, teaching positions, sales of any kind, etc. City jobs,receptionists for lawyers and other legal jobs. And we aren't talking "some" Spanish. We are talking fluent Spanish,because so many residents don't speak any English. THeir kids translate.
I get so pissed sometimes I refuse to speak Spanish because I know damn good and well the person I am talking to understands English. Here legally or not, English is the language of this country and they can learn it or do without. I don't need their business that bad.
And therein Lies part of the problem. English is NOT the official language of the USA. We HAVE no official language. In San Antonio Spanish is certainly the most used, with English barely exceeding it. But lots of cultures settled the area. We have Germans, Poles, Cjecks andfrench routinely. And since we have accepted a number of political refugees, we now have Pakistani, Farsi.Several Tribal languages from Africa, as well as severa; Asian languages including Tagalog, Indonesian, Japanese. Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese (both major dialects_ and Japanese. The trouble is that all those people are strugglimg tp LEARN English. Even the other Hispanics (Guatamalan. Ecuadorean, Portugese. Columbian, etc) Only some Mexicans have decided they don't need ENglish.
Our Founders never thought having a law making English our official language would be a problem. Then again, they never thought the American government would let illegal immigration become a problem either.
Those of us raised in the southwest have always had a give and take attitude about the border. We were welcome across the border to shop, visit then go home. We have always known how bad things are in Mexico so had no problem letting Mexicans come here for a while to earn a little money, as long as they went back home after a few months.
It's only been about 50 years since this attitude has changed. The more the federal gooberment stuck their nose into our southern border affairs, the more liberal the policies coming out of Washingtoon, the worse the problem has gotten. Now, because of the Commander of Clowns, respect for America and our way of life had dropped into the toilet and illegals no longer care to assimilate. They can demand whatever they want, knowing they will get their way. They no longer have to become Americans to live here.

The current flavor of the month of feel good bull shit coming out if the Senate is a pure joke. It die not require that any of the illegals prove competency in English. I see it everyday where an illegal can speak a few words of English to get anything for free. I've sent it where illegals fend that they can't speak English when facing arrest and serious charges. It's always funny to watch the jail staff when they take all of the illegals money and place it into a kiosk. Boy the English starts coming out real well then.
Call your senator and tell them no on amnesty. I know some of the exploiters in the Senate are not about to lesson to us the American people.
I live in a bborderline ghetto. The little taco hut across the street has NO ONE on staff who can speak English. They know enough food service words to get by, but they cannot converse even in pidgen English. ANd the oldest one there is maybe in their 30's. We haveofferedamnesty 5 times since Eisenhower. Some don't accept it even then, and passing amnesty guarantees they can hide easier when they get here. And the DRIVING!!!! No concept of the rules of the road. Not to mention, Bexar County has the highest number of DUI offenses in the state, and likely in the country. When something is provided for free, it isn't values. Clean up the immigration process, and quit giveing amnesty every 30 years or so.

I think the whole "debate" is little more than a kabuki theater extension of propaganda whose purpose is to neutralize popular dissent against something they have every intention of ramming through... even if they got 300,000,000 phone calls from us, the herd demanding no amnesty.
At one time I might have agreed. The Sensible gun legislation died the death it deserved. It all came from the phone calls, emails and faxes. The same can be done with the amnesty bull shit bill.

In answer to your question - yes, he is. And, while the proposed legislation does not require applicants to know the English language at the time of application, it should.
The law as it currently stands says they need to know English and pass a civics test. So the new law actually weakens the requirements. Now they can simply enroll in a class, grab their green card, and never actually attend the class. In D.C. that's considered progress.
