Obama observes moment of silence for Boston victims. A private moment of silence with no one else there save for the official WH photographer (otherwise, you couldn’t see the pic and know he was having a private moment of silence, would you?) “This is just…odd.” Yep.

Yes, technically, it does follow the rule of thirds.

But, when the main subject of a photo is a person or animal, we take into account the direction the subject is facing, and normally the subject should be facing the larger part of the picture, not the closest edge. Now, if you're trying to convey a particular feeling with the picture, you might disregard that part of the rule, so as to include the desk behind him, and the window, out of which he is supposed to be looking, maybe for answers to something. Also, the window opens up that side of the picture, so it doesn't look awkward, as it would if he were facing a wall, or just the edge of the photo. So this photo follows some rules, while purposely breaking others. The photographer is doing his job exactly the way he's directed.
In short, this is a very carefully staged photo, as is everything about Obama and his Administration, to illustrate the reflective moment that Obama wants us to believe he is having.
Actually, if he were doing what is correct, he shold be standing facing a corner, wearing a dunce cap!
Of course, these days a dunce cap is outlawed because it might hurt the little moron's self esteem. God forbid we should motivate someone to actually succeed. Instead we support them for life.
