Sounds to me like they are bashing part of their base for using it as well. As if it's beneath certain people to be either using the train or bus to moeve around.

"Food desets" exist in inner cities because market owners cannot cope with the crimes against their businesses---armed robbery, shoplifiting, intimidation and vandalism. Too, store owners are also faced with high insurance and tax rates and unreliable employees.
Because of all these problems the few inner city markets that remain have to charge higher prices just to make a minimal living---and then the locals accuse them of price gouging.
The problems of "food deserts" can only be solved by the people who live in the deserts. Ther $400 million Obama wants to spend will be utterly wasted.

I disagree with the idea there are no food deserts. An adult who only eats corn, potatoes, onions and iceberg lettuce can like ly find some of that even at a "stop and rob" type market (the Texas equivalent of 7-11.) Or that the restaurants serve that type of food to the exciusion of healthier food. That does not mean, however, that one's personal choices in buying even canned fruit and veggies over soda and candy acn chips is not an issue. I live in a relatively barrio-like nneighborhood. We have a bus route that runs roughly every 30 min. In a two mile radius we have Everything from Church's chicken and Jack in the box to somewhat nicer fast food like Panda Express, to really decent sit down eateries. However the majority of food served in them is still high calorie, high carb, high fat and reduced nutriet foods. There are 2 major grocery stores and several gas station type stores. But they all offer the same thing,. It isn't cheap, and I defy you to get a month's decent growceries home on the bus. Not everyone is in a position to shop daily for what they eat. There are improvements to be made all the way around, but the cultural and emotional value of food makes any legislation lame at best.

There IS a bunch of info. For my state, even though the numbers are around 5-6 years old, they already show the decrease of neighborhood stores to an increase in superstores, club stores, etc. And this was in 2006. I am sure the percentages have changed markedly over the last 3 years or so as the economy has tanked. Great resource Robert!
I spent a bit of time there and after plotting areas by different races, I clicked on the 2009 report of, i think it was persistent poverty level... I found that Indians, the hispanics along the border to the south, blacks, from East Tx to Fla, and then NC and the Whites of the Appalachians were quite obvious. I couldn't begin to break it down by actual numbers, or even Really specific locales, but it did highlight the fact that persistent poverty is not a respecter of one race over another.
If you have all those restaurants and two grocery stores in a two-mile radius, you don't have a food desert. If the stores aren't offering what you consider healthy, then ask. I have never found a store that won't stock something I want.
As for the prices, they're up everywhere. That's the inflation Obama's statisticians say doesn't exist - they can say that because they took food (and gasoline) out of the equations.
Exactly/ We have neighborhood stores all over the city. Granted, they focus on selling beer, cigarettes, ice and jumk, but nearly all of them have some food. It's just generally crap and its ALL ridiculously expensive ($2.00 for a can of deviled ham. $1.79 for a can of tomato soup. You get the picture.) OUr local Abbadabi's (so named for the Pakistani owners and clerk's) sells far more in lottery tickets and beer than it ever considers selling in food!
