Collapse implies things went out of control for the powers that be in the former Soviet bloc but that wasn´t the case, on the contrary.
It was the nomenkaltura and its power over the rest of society really being expanded at the expense of everything else.
Even the Czechoslovake "velvet revolution" was lead by the formely communist StB secret police, as exposed by KGB "defector" Anatoliy Golitsyn and Czech dissident (and former friend of Václav Havel) Petr Cibulka. Vaclav wasn´t happy with the dissent-turned-collaborator list coming out even if his own name was omitted, since it was against the interests of his masters.
Certainly the Soviet state under Brez had a none secret political police but it didn´t use heating and electricity shortages as repression tools and a mean to directly fill the pockets of its cronies at the expense of the population.
It was all under a show of democracy but of course, real democracy was absolutely the last thing they wanted for the masses, it is only in former east Germany that the "elites" ever really relaxed their control of electoral results.

In time, the same is apparently planned for the US, except this time, it won´t involve an appearance of democracy, only martial law backed by drone attacks. The other difference is that the fall of living standards isn´t the purpose since it is one of the major things that gave legitimacy to the religion of liberalism (especially among its most ardent followers), only the consequence.
The green energy policies, beside being a scam, exist to justify the worsening symptoms. Without them, the western economies would be better off but because the system is designed to empower the wannabe elites before actually working, the decline would still be ongoing and it would be much less justifiable to the public opinions.
Take the light bulbs thing for example, EU forbiddes the stronger, more classical ones. Officially it is to reduce the CO2, much more problematic if the real reason was told, namely that it is because the electrical infrastructures aren´t well managed enough to keep up with the current consumption, especially when countries on the other side of eurasia have managed to keep up with skyrocketing electrical demands for decades now.

There were words, I didn't read them, but the Leno video was very telling. It tells me, Republicans while not perfect, are more comfortable with themselves. Democrats, well they need to focus group every move they make.... probably because they're all Marxists. These are things I knew already however.
Joe, I get the same type of impression so allow me to elaborate on your thoughts a little. Both parties love being in control, but the degree is vastyl different. Rs don't mind living large on the public, but generally want to do so within constitutional limits. Ds and other leftists don't really recognize the authority of the Constitution or any other laws that they did not create or happen to want at teh time. They really want and need to pervert the current system and Constitution to take total control and bring us to their "utopia" - them (=state) in perpetual control and us peasants in perpetual servitude to the state.
