This sounds like me! I grew up dirt poor on a small farm in WV. My parents were abusive alcoholics. It's probably because of my mother constantly telling me that I can't do it, or I'll always be poor just like them, that made me a success today. I used the resources available to me. I joined the Army (mostly to get away from my parents). While I was in, I took college level courses... enough to knock out my core curriculum. I started college as soon as I got out. By this time I was married with a son on the way. My neighbor asked me if I knew anyone who could build a deck on the back of his house. I said yes, I can. I worked on weekends until the job was done. His friend saw it and wanted one too. Next thing I know, I have more jobs then I can do by myself. I took on a friend to help me. Long story short... I'm now the 3rd largest residential builder in my county. I live in a large new home that my wife and I designed. I'm everything my mother said I'd never be. PS - I put my wife through college too. She's now a corporate officer for a Fortune 500 company.
I'm no billionaire by any means, but I'd like to buy the person who made this sign a beer.

My Great Grandparents immigrated to this great country in the early 1900s. My Great Grandmother was 16 and had to prove to the immigration officials at Ellis Island that she would not be a burden on society. She and my Great Grandfather worked hard to provide for their family and didn't take a dime of help. They were they 53!
My mother was a single mom with a BA, who went back to school after her divorce from my father so that she could get a job working as a receptionist to support my brother and I. Welfare was never a choice for her. She is a 53!
After high school, I couldn't afford college. Instead of bitching and whining, I joined the military, and I served my country. I worked 60 hours a week and went to school full time at night to get my AA and BS, maintaining nearly straight A's in the process. Yes, the government helped pay for it, but I didn't get the money for nothing... I earned it. Yes I have ambition and fight to keep the money I earn. I am a 53!
It's OK to show your face! That way we know who to high-five when we see you on the street...We're proud of you, whoever you are!

Never an "occupation", but I started protesting when I was a mere babe of 52 years. I learned how to make a protest sign from an old hippy on YouTube - best danged signs in the protest!
I'm such a rebel. Excuse me please, it's time for my Metamucil.

Cool. I just read there was one arrested in San Diego. The police were trying to clean up an area for actual legitimate use tomorrow, by people who have a permit, and won't crap on the sidewalk.
That could have been my story at age 20-25. I knew I could only get what I wanted by taking personal responsibility for my own actions. I thank my "greatest generation" parents for teaching me that your own hard work will determine your future. At age 18 they "nailed my plate down" and told me it was "college or go to work"...you make the choice. It was also, a "car or college", you make the choice. I have thanked them many times for the values they instilled in me and my 3 brothers. We are the 53%.
