Old Guard Soldiers honor fallen with flags at Arlington graves

• My daughter's whole 4th grade is walking a mile to pick up flags placed in cemetery by the 5th graders last Friday. I think its a fantastic ritual for them. My wife and father-in-law thought it was the strangest "field trip" they could imagine for kids (and that they'd never do that in TX..which i don't believe) I was pretty stunned. My father-in-law eventually just left my house, saying he was in "no mood to argue", though i wasn't being mean about it.. I hope my daughter groks it a little more after today

• I am so glad that I live in a little Midwestern town rather than anywhere else in the country. Our town turns out at the cemetary every Memorial Day for a ceremony in which we read General John Logan's General Order #11, the Gettysburg Address, and, get this, we actually PRAY as a community. We lay wreaths at the headstones of our fallen Civil War dead, and remember the dead of all of our wars.

• We were putting out flags at daylight this morning, at the gravesites of our local veterans and all over town too. Only in small towns will you see all the businesses on the main drag flying our colors. I'm not a city boy so I don't know how things work in one, but in my small town the local cafes feed us vets lunch, at no cost. In my small town the loss of one soldier is felt by everyone, the older folks watched us grow up and we have watched those in the military today grow up.

  It's time to head to town to furl the flags and once again say a little prayer of thanks to those who served so honorably. Everyone have a good evening and remember to thank a vet for our freedoms.
