In the early days of Barack Obama’s presidency we were told that he was the reincarnation of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Time magazine even ran the cover below in which Obama’s face was Photoshopped onto FDR’s body.
Then the American people rejected the Obama agenda in the 2010 elections, so the Democrats cooked up a new tale for public consumption: Obama is Reaganesque. He was photographed carrying a Reagan bio. The media called his State of the Union address “absolutely Reaganesque.”
Now it turns out that it was Roosevelt who was absolutely Reaganesque, especially when it came to public employee unions.
RealClearPolitics.com lets FDR explain it in his own words:
Roosevelt’s reign certainly was the bright dawn of modern unionism. The legal and administrative paths that led to 35% of the nation’s workforce eventually unionizing by a mid-1950s peak were laid by Roosevelt.
But only for the private sector. Roosevelt openly opposed bargaining rights for government unions.
“The process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service,” Roosevelt wrote in 1937 to the National Federation of Federal Employees. Yes, public workers may demand fair treatment, wrote Roosevelt. But, he wrote, “I want to emphasize my conviction that militant tactics have no place” in the public sector. “A strike of public employees manifests nothing less than an intent on their part to prevent or obstruct the operations of Government.”
So FDR, reviled by conservatives as the father of socialist America, sounds a lot more conservative, a lot more like Ronald Reagan than Barack Obama does.

Obama could be Reaganesque very quickly. Fire the sick/striking teachers if they do not return to work, just like Reagan did with the Air Traffic Controllers. It's time to send these leeches a message. FDR was right about some things, and the proof is unfolding right before your eyes.
Along with firing the teachers who have falsified sick leave documentation, track down the guys selling phony sick passes on the corner. If they are doctors, take their licenses. If they aren't, jail them for impersonating a doctor. And what about those school buses? Who authorized them? Looks like another one who should be fired.
I don't want Obama firing school teachers and doctors or anyone else. If they are not federal employees he doesn't have the Constitutional authority. He should keep his nose out of state business, he already wields too much power.
Let the governors of the individual states do the firing (or jailing, in the case of the doctors issuing phony sick notes).
Elrond, I'm pretty sure that's what RHG meant, I sure as hell can't see him sticking up for the D*ckhead-in-Chief. I know we need to worry about this Cheese-d*ck-in-Charge getting way too much power, that's why we have to wack his pee-pee...soon!
If FDR had been in the private sector, he would have been against private industry unions. It was all about power he held, and public employee unions would have challenged his power. He was for big powerful government, because he was the head of that government. His positions, therefore, were just self serving.
And for all you offended FDR fans, he did do a great job in leadership through the war.
It was the last war run by the military that's why it ran well..
Starting with the Korean War, conflicts have been run from Washington DC..
And unforutnately, too often from the White House..
I guess the fact that he's right on this one has no bearing on your post? Unions, (and I AM a member of one), bargain with employers, and come to an agreement that allows the employer to compete in the marketplace. Or, failing that, to be bought out by a socialistic government. But there is no competition for government services, so the agencies just pass on the cost of outrageous government employee's union's demands on to the people. Until now. I believe these days are coming to an end. At least I hope so.
