Parents at progressive school in a panic. At the Blue School, a $32,000-per-year private charter school in Manhattan founded by the Blue Man Group, where kids of progressive parents can decide their own curriculum and their own daily attendance schedule, parents are in a lather because their kids aren’t learning to read. Gee, who would’ve guessed that would happen?

    Here's a bit of human nature many people would rather deny: learning is often WORK and most people would rather avoid WORK. This probably goes double or triple for kids. This parents who sent their kids to this "school" just paid $32K to find that out.

    • What makes these parents think they are in a position to determine curriculum? IF they are so sharp, Home school. You set the curriculum, the attendance schedule, the homework assignments. And its way cheaper that $32 grand a year!

    • One of the most important things you'll ever learn (and for God's sake, learn it YOUNG!) is that for most of your life you're going to have to do stuff you don't want to do - and right at the same damned moment when there's something else that you DO want to do!

      Those who think they'll be better off (or better people) if they always follow their whims are certifiably insane. And people who put children on that track are downright vile.

    So you opine that to believe in intelligent design is "moronic". Ok, so how did a 4 chamber heart evolve or the EKG wave? We still don't know exactly what gravity is. By the way, if you can read, you can thank the Christianity for that. An evolutionist still can NOT explain where matter and energy came from, nor why it should exist at all. So just what was there BEFORE the big bang? An evolutionist can not state why the big bang occured at all and what caused it.

    • Many of those things are at least partially if not entire proven by full scientific methods. For example gravity is the rate of acceleration between two objects based on their mass (9.8m/s on earth). Knowing that we know that an object's energy is linked to it's mass via Einsteins famous formula e=mc^2. As for the big bang there are several theories about the shifting of matter that are far more complicated to get into. The heart chamber thing? Well that's just more and more complex organisms needing the extra pumping power to circulate their blood so they adapted.

      We have tons of real scientific theories to support all these things without needing to dive into a faith that is only 2000 years old to answer questions that are millions of years old.

      • Scientific THEORY and scientific FACTS are pretty far apart. We have lots of theories. Very few facts. Einstied opined that neutrino wre faster thatn the speed of light. Now theiy say welll,,,,, maybe not. Also Einstein ( and 5 generation sof followers( have been unable to work out a "theory of Everything, that unitfies the theories of how large mass works vs how small mass works. We have deluded outselves that we understand the universe. We don't. We don't have a thimble full of real knowledge. SO given that, we are in no position to say definitively THIS is THIS or THAT is THAT. ANd certainly not to blow off the ID that many believe.

      • Here's a news flash: the theory of evolution is a theory. I wouldn't discount a prime mover or ID and it doesn't necessarily mean it is a 2000 year old Christian thing per se. To think that something sprang from nothingness without a plan of sorts demonstrates a serious lack of critical thinking skills. No matter how far back an evolutionist goes, the question of how and why an adaptation occurred or life came from previously inert material can not be answered without conceding that something gave it a push. Evolution can not explain the creation of the universe.

        • I was watching a documentary on the plesiosaur, and it was hilarious how the narrator said, "It evolved from land dinosaurs; finding its environment threatened it developed flippers and adapted to life in the sea." Wow! Handy! And we can't cut a tree down if a spotted owl lives in it! It won't adapt? If a land dinosaur can grow flippers and casually move into the sea because its feeding grounds are threatened, then why be worried about the polar bear? If its ice melts won't it just transform into a fish-bear?

          Of course, their story is "beneficial mutation." So right when the land dinosaurs' feeding grounds were threatened there JUST HAPPENED TO BE several babies accidentally born with flippers. Awesome! One day you're a circus freak, the next day you're ensuring the survival of your species! That's like an "Ugly Duckling" stoy times a million!

          They want you to believe in art without an artist. Utterly absurd.

  • What kind of fucking idiot sends their kids to a school by the blue man group? And what credentials do a bunch of guys who paint themselves blue and bang on drums and spray audiences with water have that would warrant opening a school?
    For a bunch of enlightened intellectuals, lefties sure are fucking morons!

    • To be fair, it's just as moronic as christian conservatives pushing for intelligent design to be taught in schools when it has no scientific merit.

      Both sides are guilty of degrading our education system.

      • To me for an instructor to mention "some groups believe there was some kind of intelligence behind what we are studying. We have no way to validate that scientifically, so we will not be going into that in detail in this class," would not kill anyone, nor warp anyone's mind about scientific creation. They could even offer an elective in Creation Stories and discuss several culture's beliefs about creation. The 2 are not contrdictory.

      • john, I know you cracked on I.D., but do you mean scientific creationism? Some I.D. proponents believe aliens posited life here then split.

            I just remember some fellows from Pennsylvania several years ago promulgating that alien I.D. stuff.

      • Tell that to Richard Dawkins, the world's most famous atheist, who accidentally admitted that he believed in intelligent design during a forum with the Archbishop of Canterbury. Oops. Seems once he got into the logic of the evolution/atheist worldview, he was forced into an ID position. Like I keep saying, lefties are a never-ending source of comedy.

    It reminds me of a show I saw recently when a girl had parents who were exercising progressive parenting which meant that she was free to have as much sex as she wanted as long as she told them she was having sex and staying over at the boyfriend. Lo and behold she got pregnant out of a sudden her behavior was unnacceptable and they were not about to be punished with an unwanted child (sounds familiar right?) so she had to get rid of it (in the show that meant adoption) and to never have any contact with that baby again so she could have a "normal" life and fulfill their desire of her future. I had to chuckle at the hypocrisy. As long as she was not a burden to them per se she could do whatever she wanted but once there was a burden to them, they wanted to THEN exercise parental authority and not even a compassionate stance.

    Progressives are all alike. They are stupid. Rules, regulations, morals... all those things are there for a reason. It is easy to abuse or overuse that is true, however, properly managed regulations, rules and morals are there for our protection and increase in wisdom and knowledge. Progressives running from rules creates chaos... why won't they learn?

  • Sad part is this school isn't much different from the Union run public schools in NY, at least as far as the literacy rate is concerned.

    • The difference is that the union-owned schools have the kids from almost sun-up to certainly past sun-down in order to feed them three squares and indoctrinate them.

      For the Blue Skool student, home is just where the he/she sleeps and have their state-obliged managers (formerly known as "parents") tell them, "I'm busy right now. Ask me later." Then, Mommy or Daddy turns back around while on her cell phone asking, "Sorry 'bout that, Muff. What were you saying about that new trainer at 24/7 Fitness?"

    3PM - My chauffeur picks me up and takes me home where I go to mommy's basement and fire up my computer for the rest of the day and night while eating Twinkies and drinking Coke.

    • Careful now. If you're in NYC, then you may have trouble finding those Twinkies and Coke, if The Nanny gets his way! Otherwise, your schedule fits perfectly with the progressive "agenda"

          • This guy is like the dark drip 2.0. Just eough "knowledge" to look stupid. Cheetos don't kill you. And overall lifestyle with unhealthy food to the excusion or near exclusion of healthy food, genetics, exercise levels, and exposures all contribute to our life span. Get over it.

  • The Blue School is something that could only happen in New York City or California. Rich lefty yuppies don't want their children going to public schools (too many rough colored kids there) so the opt for an expensive "progressive" school that validates their liberal "bona fides" while putting their kids on a fast track to an Ivy League college.

    The yuppies big mistake here was in thinking that a progressive rock group could, somehow, launch a successful progressive school.

    • I wonder if the Blue Man Group started this school as a way to poke fun at progressives and bilk a few progressives at the same time. "Look at the stupid progressives! They actually believe in their own BS! And look at the money they give us!"

      However, if they actually BELIEVED in this school...yeesh.

  • My wife and I taught our kids to read before they were eligible for Kindergarten so I guess we saved $32,000 (oops, I forgot, men and women STAYING TOGETHER is also so anti-PC, isn't it.)

    • I agree. If a grade school is teaching kids to read, I have to say, "What the hell were the parents waiting for?"

  • Ahhh.. who needs to know how to read and write? It's about FEELINGS! One can express oneself with dance, music, slapping paint on a canvas, or when a bit older, slapping paint on one's own body. Reading is just soooo... passe. Technology has machines that will read FOR these children, so they can concentrate on expressing their emotions, which is the most important thing. Too bad my kid didn't have such a progressive mom. She could be peeing in a cup and calling it art, instead of pursuing a PhD. Poor thing.

    • Your fault for not providing her with things and places where she could be creative and explore her feelings. Bad Mom! (removing tongue from cheek)

      • Mine is going for her Doctorate in Robotics and Natural Language Processing. She manages to avoid much of the uber-liberal garbage that the "arts" get pounded with. She is a little bit more "moderate" than I would like to see, but she easily recognizes hypocrisy and stupidity (and is not afraid to point it out), so I don't think I have much to worry about, even in the hallowed halls of her institution.
