More liberal lunacy: Pointy-headed academics claim that calling animals pets is insulting

Don’t alarm bells go off in your head whenever you see the words “academics?” Don’t you just know that whatever follows that word is going to be completely absurd? Well, rest assured that British academics haven’t let you down.

Professor Andrew Linzey doesn't want you to insult your companion animals

The Telegraph UK has the idiotic info:

Domestic dogs, cats, hamsters or budgerigars should be rebranded as “companion animals” while owners should be known as “human carers”, they insist.

Even terms such as wildlife are dismissed as insulting to the animals concerned – who should instead be known as “free-living”, the academics including an Oxford professor suggest.

The call comes from the editors of then Journal of Animal Ethics, a new academic publication devoted to the issue.

It is edited by the Revd Professor Andrew Linzey, a theologian and director of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, who once received an honorary degree from the Archbishop of Canterbury for his work promoting the rights of “God’s sentient creatures”.

In its first editorial, the journal – jointly published by Prof Linzey’s centre and the University of Illinois in the US – condemns the use of terms such as ”critters” and “beasts”.

We would call these guys dumbshits, but that would probably be considered insulting to shit.

  • Whatever this guy is getting paid to write this load of tripe, it's too much.

  • What is happening in the UK? I mean insanity doesn't even come close to describing this. How exactly do they know what animals feel and think? This is seriously disturbing. People who are into animal this much tend to be misanthropes and cannot handle human to human relationships that well. It is pathetic.

    • They will probably b*tch about how the SEALS are misusing the names of seals and whatever. *rolls eyes*

  • So I asked my basset hound (Homer) if he would prefer that I call him something other than "pet". He just turned around, licked his balls and then wagged his tail while giving me "that look". It suddenly dawned on me that after a feat like that, I should be calling him "Sir".

  • I have a very simple solution for this.

Issue grants to ship the academics to Afghanistan. Have them explain what the natives should and shouldn't do with goats. Lather, rinse, repeat until we run out of pointy headed academics that think we live in a damned Disney movie.

In the long term, we'd save big on grant money.

  • I'll worry about what I call my pets as soon as they learn English and tell me it offends them.

    • AND start cleaning up after themselves, getting their own food, pay rent and help out with the cleaning around the house.

  • My dogs didn't care what I called them, as long as there was food in the bowl. I think the term "academics" should be replaced by "pedantic ass cretins" - gotta nice ring.

  • How is "Human carer" any less insulting to the stupid pet? If I were a dog I would be upset at the thought I needed someone to "care" for me. My self-esteem would plummet at the thought of my own inadequacies as a canine. Pretty soon I would need a shrink. Of course, that would be after I go eat some fresh poop in the backyard...
