• What really ticks me off about the polar bear stuff is that they are always portrayed as ivory soap white (like a baby harp seal). I have seen a few in Manitoba (and a few stuffed, ok shoot me peta) and they are yellow.
  Apparently they have hollow hair (good insulation) that reflects snow & ice and looks white in an all white environment (good for killing food) even though their high fat diet (seals & UN types) colour it yellow. Bet they wouldn't get the same donations with an authentic yellow polar bear. lol.

• On this same not, I recently saw a program on the LAST time the glaciers startd melting and the sea levels rose. Happened several HUNDRED thousnad years ago when there WERE no people to speak of. How is it this tme its all our fault?

  • Because we're ugly Americans. Don't worry about all that pollution coming from China, Russia, and other countries. It's all OUR fault.

  • You count the census workers before they go out, then you count them when they come back, and the difference is the number of polar bears. Duh.

• Interesting polar bear trivia: if you watch early episodes of The Addams Family, there is a large stuffed brown bear which stands just inside their living room. I've read that that was real polar bear, with the fur dyed. Later in the series, it has turned white!

  There was also a running gag with the polar bear rug, which was often in the hallway, and roared when visitors stepped on it. Haven't found out if that was also a real skin or a prop reproduction. (pics of both follow)

  • One thing that always made me growl was that Coke commercial they were showing in the theatres a couple years ago. Drove me crazy - polar bears cavorting with penguins! For God's sake, they live on opposite ends of the world! They never see each other!

    Now I notice Coke is still doing polar bears in commercials, but the penguins are gone. Must be the stupidity bugged other people, too.

• I love polar bears, they are incredible animals, & the fact they have become a political football pisses me off. They should not be the mascot for a socialist scam to redistribute money in the name of "global warming/climate change". All for the greater good, of course. These are they the largest carnivores walking the earth today, they are ruthless hunters, & live in the most extreme of habitats. Plus they can swim for miles. The polar bear population was just over 5,000 back in the 1950's, it is over 25,000 today. They are doing fine

  • Polar bears have never been on the CDN endangered species list and with the increase in arctic cooling and ice mass it will be a long time until they are.
    As for seals, they are generally regarded as "the rats of the sea" in maritime Canada as their population has increased to some 4.5 million plus in the last 20 years, due mostly to the fishing moratorium on cod (1 seal eats over 1 ton of cod per year). Drink your coke, send your money to WWF, in the long run the polar bears and the seals have a better chance of survival than your local Red Lobster.

    By the way, I have NEVER seen a polar bear, so by Progressive logic they must not exist. So how can something that does not exist go extinct.
