I won't even visit California (or New York) because I don't want to pay a penny to the government in either state.

Well, I must admit, if I had stayed in the military, I could have retired 3 years ago at age 52, with 30 years in service. There are government jobs that you can retire from younger that aren't such a drain on the economy. Military retirement, if I remember correctly, is at 75% of your last salary, which isn't that great unless you're an officer.
