Executives at Warner Brothers have long believed that Ellen DeGeneres is the heir apparent to Oprah Winfrey in daytime TV. Still, they were startled by the news that a media research firm delivered to them last spring.
The researchers from SmithGeiger, who had been hired to assess talk shows, convened to tell a group of six executives that “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” was, for the first time, on par with “The Oprah Winfrey Show” (and, in some cases, exceeding “Oprah”) in the minds of viewers.
How is this possible? How can racist, homophobic, sexist Americans possibly choose a fat, black woman and a lesbian as their favorite television talk show hosts?
Warner Brothers should demand its money back. The research is obviously faulty.

You all have no idea what you're talking about. Have you seen the audiences of Oprah or Ellen? (mostly white, middle to upper class red-state women) Are you suggesting that no conservative women are stay at home mothers?
I think we are all missing the elephant in the corner here. Oprah is just as much a lesbian as Ellen is . . . the main difference is that when Miss Winfrey tried to come out of the closet she found the door to be much smaller than she was.
I am not really a follower of Oprah so don't know what you mean. She tried to come out of the closet? That is... interesting.
I am not at home to watch them. I don't bother DVRing either. I don't want to sound mean but the people that spent their time watching these shows usually have no jobs OR they are home makers or stay at home people. They are not necessarily dumb people of course, but obviously this is where they are getting their viewpoints in life.
With that said, I am not implying that people that don't watch these shows ARE sexist, racist, nor homophobic. I am sure that Oprah is a good person and so is Ellen. Oprah does talk out of her ass a great deal because she is the ULTIMATE CAPITALIST that believes in government social programs which is weird to me, and I know dany is going to tell me "girl you know that is how it is with these people", but still it is just weird to me this double standard.
I don't know how fat fits into the equation though?
You can go into a Barnes & Noble or Border's & find Oprah viewers. They tend to be clustered in the self help section every few weeks when they get a book suggestion from the gret one herself. Many are co-dependent & are people I as a guy avoid like the plague.
I read "Night" in high school and a great book, but when I heard she "recommended" I cringed. Why should I pick a book just because she tells me to? Sad!
KQ, I am with you, why would you, or anyone else buy a pick she promotes? But there are plenty who do, & if you are an author, you want her telling the world about your book. That said, Glenn Beck has turned into an Oprah type of figure in terms of books. He mentions it on the air, & it shoots up Amazon's list. He tells you about a 40 year old book on progressivism, then it goes from #307,598 to # 4 in about 2 days, that is funny. But I think Beck & Oprah have 1 thing in common, their audience trusts them because they have never steared them wrong when it comes to books & what they are about. They know what "their people" are looking for, & those people are loyal as long as they feel they are being treated honestly.
I agree with Paul, because those of us who are considered the racists, etc, are the ones out working so the welfare lot who watch that crap, can sit home on their couches and get paid by obama to do so. Therein lies the rub. When are we going to get racist, bigot, homophobe Obama out of the white house, and the racist, bigoted, homophobic democrats out of the congressional houses, so that we don't have to continue to write paychecks to the losers who are at home watching this dribble?

Simple answer: Because at the time these shows are on TV, real Americans (ie. those racist, homophobic, sexist Republican/conservative Americans) are at work. See? The media template still works.
Notice how when conservatives complain about the low moral and ethical standards portrayed on most shows, the liberals scream "Censorship!" as loudly as possible?
Sure, if you don't like what you see, you can always change the channel..but what do you do when it all sucks?
Easy choice--turn it off and watch a proven commodity, a good movie or classic television show. 500 channels of mental junk food is why i don't have cable or satellite.
I stopped watching TV in the early '80s. I was watching television programs about squirrels and deer, but not regular TV. I watched Discovery in its infancy, that was all. I watched Dallas. I never liked daytime drama. I watched Letterman for the first couple of years. There were some good shows, like Starsky and Hutch. But I was out partying. You are right, it
is not worth the money, no matter how many channels they offer.
Because only empty brained fools watch this kind of crap
