Ay, caramba! Republicans introduce bills to make English the nation’s official language

Well, this will never pass. It just makes too damn much sense. And if by some strange turn of events it did pass, President Obama would veto it faster than you can say, “C’est la vie.”

english-only
Speak Engalish, damn it

TheHill.com has the details:

Republicans in both the House and Senate have introduced legislation that would declare English the official language of the United States and require the development of English language testing guidelines for those applying for U.S. citizenship.

The English Language Unity Act would set out a new chapter in U.S. code that imposes an obligation on U.S. officials to “preserve and enhance the role of English as the official language of the Federal Government.”

Part of this chapter would include a “uniform English language rule” holding that “all citizens should be able to read and understand generally the English language text of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the laws of the United States made in pursuance of the Constitution.”

Here in California, we currently produce ballots in at least eight written languages (English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Japanese, Khmer and Korean) and one language (Cahuilla) that has no written form.

And we wouldn’t be surprised if Ebonics joined the list very soon.

  • My question is what are the chances of this passing and how hard will they fight for it? I am thinking this is for show, hopefully not.

    • I dont think that is the case at all. People who DO seek to legally acquire citizenship OR legal status to work here ARE expected to know the language.

I think this is more to the case for the illegals into the country.

  • Its time that those who come here at least speak the language. All the street signs are in English.

If you come here from another country at least you can do is make an effort to speak the language of this country. If you wish to continue to speak the language of your homeland. Pack up your crap and GET THE HELL OUT of the USA. We speak English here.

    • Every single country that I have ever visited or lived in, the people EXPECT you to make the effort if YOU DO NOT make the effort they ignore you or treat you like crap. The US is one of the most accomodating countries I have ever been in and even though "nice" in some aspects it is not appropriate.

  • No government services should be offered in any language but english. Look at the problems in Canada and especially Belgium - not only is it ridiculously expensive to train government workers in other languages, it divides the people to such a great extent that you get separatist movements based almost completely on language. The faster the US passes an english language Bill the better.

  • Okay. I mean it is normal. I was surprised the US does not have a national language. Most countries do, it is how it should be. I say this is long overdue.

    • Sorry Chris but because of serious budget deficits caused by all the other languages ballots for the California no longer has enough money to provide your ONE ballot in French! Here in Kalifornia we provide 11 English language ballots for the 11 Kalifornia citizens who still speak English! Here in Kalifornia we teach English as a Second Language in all of our public education facilities in order to pander to our very, very large mostly multicultural, barely legal, mostly transient population!

  • "President Obama would veto it faster than you can say, “C’est la vie.”"

Well, we have to start somewhere. Just getting a bill introduced is something! Let's hope and pray we can replace this buffoon with someone who'll sign a bill like this!

  • Makes too much sense. Obama will be out to vilify the law makers and sick the Department of Injustice on them.

I too live in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia and conservatively estimate it would save the state three billion dollars every year.

  • I remember some years back there was a terrible fire and several illegals were killed because of the language barrier. This idiot politician - a Liberal Democrat if ever I saw one - was being interviewed. He said that our firefighters needed to learn words and phrases in spanish. I wanted to barf. They're in OUR country and they need to learn OUR language after they come here LEGALLY. Pardon my shouting.
