Satanic performances at Grammys cause Christian singer to leave. “I’ve never been more honored to sing about Jesus and for Jesus,” tweeted Natalie Grant after leaving the auditorium, “and I’ve never been more sure of the path I’ve chosen.” Was it the mass gay wedding or Katy Perry dancing around an upside down broomstick surrounded by demons that drove her away?

  • Sounds like Katy Perry's act is starting to dry up. This is what happens when a pop star starts getting desperate. Same thing happened to Lady Gag Me, and will happen to that juvenile delinquent Justin Dumbass.

    I thought it was tie-in to the movie Maleficent.. at least the opening part. I didn't see the whole thing, but wifey and daughter were watching.

    I returned to my tablet repair project because I didn't want to sit there all agape. Can't help it, despite her music not being to my taste, but Katy is just damn hot.

    • Not unless you want to draw attention to "shock" performances/acts. I had this argument in Kansas City in September at an Iron Maiden concert. A group of us were talking about who we had seen lately, & Ghost (or Ghost BC for legal reasons in America) was brought up. A guy from Venezuela wasn't sure who we were talking about, I showed his a photo or 2...

      ...& he said there would be a backlash because of a fact that almost everyone in South America is Catholic. They look like an evil version of the church, & it's all done tongue in cheek. Me & a friend of mine were telling him that would guarantee they would become that much bigger. Just like Kiss, Alice Cooper, Rammstein, & Marilyn Manson before them, the "bad reaction" would be gold to them. I then drove to Madison to see them just 2 days removed from their South American tour with Iron Maiden & Slayer, & talked to a couple of members & asked about that in particular. They said the ONLY issue was at Rock in Rio, & that was due to Metallica fans who wanted to only see them. The rest of South America was great, & I also heard that from Maiden fans who traveled to their gigs. From talking to them, they clearly understand what they are doing, getting a reaction, good or bad, is good for business. They get it, & it looks like a growing number of fans do as well.

          • George Harrison is rolling over in his grave! Why can't we just like a performer for the music ( or dance or whatever?) Why all . The weirdness. This . Is right up there with the beiber, gagag, and the rest.

          • sa, are you that much of a fuddy-duddy? Putting on a show is not a new idea & is hardly limited to "shock rock". Broadway productions are over the top & way beyond the music. Classical can have the goofy themes as well, so maybe this clip from the Metropolitan Opera will be more to your liking...

          • Yeah, I am that much of a fuddy duddy. Basically, it annoys me that great talent is passed over for less (or non) talented people get pushed into stardom by their behaviours. I like Garth Brooks. I like his music. I hear he puts on a great show. That's great. But talentless worms like the Beiber, Gagme andand others are touted as "stars." I like Metallica. Good show, good music. But there should always be good music!

          • All kidding aside, there is great music being written & performed by very talented musicians. But chances are you won't see it on the Grammy's, or the AMA's, or featured in Rolling Stone, & most likely not hear it on commercial radio. You can find lots of great music online on YouTube, when you find what you like, buy it. When they come to town, check them out. Support the music you like with your dollars. It's a wild west free market in the music industry, there is something for everyone. There is good music, & sometimes you have to look for it.

          • YouTube has been great for getting some attention to talented people that commercial record labels wouldn't even look at! I applaud it overall, even with the occasional epic fails like the Bieber.

          • I guess my question would be: out of all the things they could do to shock and entertain, why do so many of them resort to devil worshipping themes? You don't find that a tad odd? Somewhat suspicious? Weirdly coincidental?

          • JP, If music was classified in terms of books/literature/movies, metal would probably be in the "horror" section. It lends itself to exploring darker themes in a way that makes them safe for the listener. In particular, the more shocking theatrical acts. It's a work, an act, it's meant to fun in a creepy way, & most folks get that. It also can serve as an outlet for people who feel a certain way as well. It all started with 2 acts in particular that I first heard of on Limbaugh's program. Screamin Jay Hawkins from 1956...

          • Sounds like typical 60's music with a (surprise!) drug theme. Crimson and Clover, In the Garden of Eden, all same genre.

      • You're saying they just do it for the money. Okay, how is that any different from what a revivalist preacher would shout from the pulpit? The preacher would look at what you're saying and counter, "Yeah, that's what selling your soul looks like."

        I guess what I'm saying is there are repercussions for doing certain things, whether you try to make light of what you're doing or not. Here's a similar hypothetical I discussed with some friends once: if you were a movie star, would you take the Lord's name in vain if that's what was written for your part? My answer was an emphatic no. Down to my last dime and offered a million dollars to read that line, I wouldn't do it.

        • Same with nude photography. I don't care WHAT's in the script, I ain't taking my clothes off! I am committed to saving the eyesight of those who may see said sight.

        • It's not about the money as such. You need to show an ability to make money or you won't be around for long. Now, the guys in Ghost are into the theatrical aspect as much as the music, & what you find when you talk to them or listen to the many interviews they have done, they are very knowledgeable about the history of rock music, using the music that has influenced them, & it can be heard in their albums. It's very well crafted & they sound excellent live. It's basically Vaudeville with amplification, it's meant to be fun, & it's not supposed to be serious. It's sort of like being a heel in pro wrestling, the tough part is playing the role. You really are not the character you portray.

          • Yeah, it's about the money. I have to call you on that. You can call it "getting attention" all you want, they're trying to get attention so they can make money. Which makes it pretty obvious they're selling their souls. Playing a role is one thing, even a bad guy if that's the role - pretending to worship the devil while thousands of fans scream approval, or, as in my example, taking the Lord's name in vain for a movie role so it is digitally recorded for the rest of human history, well, those things are something else. God is jealous and God is vengeful, I read it in a book somewhere.

  • If Natalie Grant had issues with the gay weddings, that's 1 thing. But the "Satanic" performances, I'm not buying it. Not a Katy Perry fan, but it's about putting on a show, & being a bit out there. Actually, there are very few truly Satanic bands that actually believe in spreading a Satanic message. Grant missed an opportunity to perform for people who have not heard her music or her message.

      • Only if the music doesn't hold up. That same argument was made 40 years ago with Alice Cooper & Kiss. They are still on the road going strong. If Katy Perry's music doesn't make people listen 10 or 20 years from now, then you will be right.

    • No, the old "showmanship" thing doesn't cover it. It's actual Satanism. It's been going on at the Grammies for years, and it gets more overt every time.

      • Don't confuse a "shock rock" horror show with being Satanic, it's not.
        As for the Grammy's, they are about being a spectacle, so when I see "outrageous" stage presentations, I don't think anything of it. They are going for a reaction, & they are getting it.

          • Alice and Marilyn are brilliant showmen. Saw an interview with MM once. He kind of had to guide the interviewer a bit. The reporter was trying to uncover some satanic angle. MM actually told the guy, "you know this s an act, right?" All the while he kept alluding to the fact that he himself could not believe that he was making a crapton of money just by wearing make up and spooky contacts. He seemed pretty switched "on" to me and not flaky like most successful music acts.

          • Please don't compare an actually talented artist and master showman like Alice Cooper with a worthless, washed up schmuck like marilyn manson.

          • I've seen both live & both put on a good show. I will say, I enjoy Cooper more, but Manson was actually a solid live act.
