• At least it looks like the responses are trying to set him straight. Honest to God though, is that a put-on? From one of "us" pretending to be a "worst-case scenario"? I really can't believe anyone is that stupid, not over 12 years of age.

        • I don't think there are any rules, at least none that can be relied upon. Many writers have made the point that printing money in and of itself does not cause inflation - take the case where the Fed prints up a gazillion dollars but instead of circulating, they go into mattresses (figurartively speaking.) Because the money does not circulate it does not bid up the prices of goods and services. This is why Japan's 20 yrs of stimulus did not work and why Helipcopter Ben's QEs ain't doing much either. Of course, if the economy picks up and the hoarded money comes out of the woodwork.... BOOM!

          Fiat money is kinda like the apartment building in the Monty Python sketch... as long as the users believe in it, it holds up. The US is a powerful economy and has a lot of resources, intellectual and creative as well as natural ones, that make it hard for even a political class as dense as the modern one to break. But nothing is indestructible.

        • Fiat money, and all its derivatives, turns my brain to linguine. Logic doesn't help me, and I don't know what the alternatives are. Seems to me that there aren't enough hard assets to reflect the national or global economy anymore. I don't state preferences above, regarding servicing of debt, but just observe that it's unavoidable that we will inflate our way out of some significant portion of it. We may have more options while we yet hold the reserve currency.. or at least Fed & Treasury perceive them

        • Good stuff on consumer debt follows. Seems to me that present doldrums more triggered by consumer debt then government debt (I.e. low demand as deleveraging proceeds)

        • I think that the foul hand of government plays a role in overinflated consumer debt, and he did a good job of showing that link, while managing to work in a cameo from scumbag politicians of both stripes.

          I think that paying to vote is a very good idea. People have to have an economic stake in it, or they vote for very unsound things.
