The only reason I won't be traveling to France is because I would prefer to go to Italy and Germany, where my family is from. Then there's the problem of getting my wife on a plane for that length of time, she hates to fly.

Actually, I've never been to that website, and didn't even know of its existence until someone mentioned it on this board. And I've never made any of the claims you're supposedly refuting, so I'm not at all sure why you're throwing them at me. I know France has problems, just as all nations have problems. I know, too, that they have some problems that we do not. But that doesn't mean that there aren't things we could learn from them, just as they can learn from us.
As I said earlier, I'm in good company, since Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson both loved France like a second home. And, if you were ever to visit there with an open mind, you'd see why.

Been there. I lived on and traveled the continent for two years. I liked Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands better. The people were much more friendly and engaging. Germans were surprisingly much more than anyone would have expected having been occupied by the allies and having foreign bases. Austrians and the Swiss were fun to be around also.
The French I came in contact with were quite arrogant and rude, they acted as if they knew everything about everything.... and put on an air of superiority that was unmatched by any other Euro nation I had been to (to include Germany). Not all people were that way of course, a few were quite nice. But those who acted that way were many and were acutely so. I hope to visit a friend in Paris sometime next year, so we'll see if things have improved from the late 70s when I was last there.

Mainly because those same wealthy politicians (who claim they share your desire for poor people to have a better life) have had well over a half century to create this myth of a great society, and haven't done it yet. The sad part is you (and others) buy into this myth that government can help people climb the ladder of success.... and maybe they could....if they were as truly altruistic as you have been fooled into believing they are. But they won't.
And the reason they won't is, once poverty is wiped out, they would have no platform to run on any longer.....Elect me and I will wipe out poverty by making sure that evil rich people pay their fair share of taxes, so that you (the commoners) can prosper like they (the patricians) do. Then, when they get into office, they get rich or richer ans park their yachts in RI to avoid taxes in their home state. They look for every possible loop hole they can to avoid paying their fair share.
And before you spout partisan drivel like you are often wont to do, let me say something else.
The GOP has been guilty of lying too. They tell the people they will cut taxes, shrink government, and create more freedom for people to make their own way....but when when they get elected, they do not. They have compromised with the lying progressives who want government grown. They grow government too, they just do it at a slower rate than your heroes.
Bottom line here is, Dems lie to their demographics and the GOP lies to theirs. In the end no one does what they say they will do. So, trusting government is not the real option here, but having the ability to trust in oneself is the best option.
All of this is compounded by the hypocrisy of the people who you think can make government work for you. Francois Hollande is but one person on the planet who fits this description yet you defend his ability to own much.

France has had socialist government leaders before, you know. Back in the late nineties, Lionel Jospin was their prime minister, and he wasn't poor. Neither is Ségolène Royal, a previous candidate for French president (and ex-significant other of Hollande). And guess what? It wasn't an issue with French voters.
Sounds like you have a very erroneous idea of what a socialist looks like, dresses like or lives like. That misconception is, of course, a product of the right wing propaganda machine, designed to scare you away from any ideology with the word "social" in it. Why would those who fuel said propaganda machine want to let the word get out that socialism DOESN'T equal across-the-board poverty?
