I've got to side with the school on this one, though i don't agree with their disciplinary action. It is clearly spelled out in the rules and yes, they do make guns that small that can hurt or kill you. Both students should have been sent to the office. The one who took the keychain from the kid's pack should have been disciplined for stealing and causing a disruption. The kid who brought the keychain should have been counseled and reminded that school rules prohibit such items on campus. His parents should have been called and send the kid home for the rest of the day and call it done. The rule states that he can be expelled for up to one year, but doesn't specify a minimum disciplinary action. We don't know if this kid has a history of trouble making or not and this could have been the final straw as it were, for other infractions and warnings.

Zero tolerance is zero common sense. If it had been a condem or an aborted child in some type of container, the school system would've sang their praises.

Well, to be fair as possible, school policy does prohibit carrying a "replica" firearm, although it's a bit of a stretch considering this a "replica."
As a point of reference, Coventry is a very rural, mostly well-to-do part of the Ocean State, not a part where you might expect would-be badasses or wannabees carrying around toy guns to seem cool or tough. In Providence, Pawtucket, or Central Falls, I could see the rationale for such a rule. But Coventry?
Still: yes, it's a stupid rule. But unless the kid himself was equally stupid he shoulda known better. Mixed feelings on this one, honestly.
Question for more of a gun expert than me: is 2" a plausible size for a functional Derringer?
Actually, yes, but it would only shoot BB caps, which is a .22 super short shell with only the primer for propellant, and a .22 cal lead bb for a projectile.

That is not a friend as far as I am concerned. People need to calm down. Talk to the kid and to the parents suspending him when there is no reason to is stupid to me.
The beauty of all this is that it has to be stupid to the kids too... I would wager that one of the most effective antidotes to brainwash is the propagandizing agent practicing overreach- the "key" (sorry, couldn't resist) is to ensure that young folks are properly educated as to the nature of this. Practice this very stupid form of zero tolerance on teens and pre-teens and you cultivate the next generation of counterculture.
The progs own hubris could very well be their own undoing. Hopefully the "friend" gets a civics lesson via ass kicking.
Clearly (to me anyway), the Department of Education is forcing a policy of conditioning kids to be afraid of guns so that banning them will be a snap in a generation or so from now. Progressives are pragmatic like that.
