What matters is whether a given population is breeding at replacement level. Almost nobody is breeding at replacement level. And believe it or not, it's about religious belief, not affluence. If a country is religious, they have children. If they're not, they don't. And some religions are more equal than others, with Christianity leading the pack. That holds even with subpopulations: conservatives tend to be more religious and have more children than liberals. The U.S. is doing better than Europe. Christian countries in Africa are reproducing better than Muslim countries. Etc.
