I'd be shocked if any readers here own Subarus. I'm pretty sure they are THE car for liberals who can't afford the Prias.
A friend of mine in the Air Force had one, he kept saying that it was a lunk. He kept spelling it backwards.

I was involved in a family discussion recently about the quality of Japanese cars versus American cars. I said there was no difference anymore, that historically Japanese cars were junk and then it was American cars that were junk but now it's all pretty damn good. But the Japanese car owners in my family insist that Japanese is better, especially Toyota. I pointed out all the Toyota recalls in the last few years. They claim it's all bullshit. So I told them the story of when I was selling real estate and four people in the office bought new cars at the same time: two of us Japanese, two of us American. (I was one of the two Japanese.) Well, lo and behold, the new Lexus owner, who was adamant that Japanese was better, had to keep taking her car back to the dealer with problems, I had to take my Mitsubishi back twice with problems, and the two American cars never had a problem. The Lexus owner COULD NOT ADMIT THE AMERICAN CARS WERE BETTER, EVEN WHEN SHE WAS ON HER SIXTH LOANER FROM THE DEALER BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS. I think it's cognitive dissonance. She bought the damn lemon so she had to stick by it. I've never felt that way about cars. They either roll down the road when I need them to or they don't--no misguided loyalty from me. Seems to me the Japanese cars have just as many recalls as the American cars.
I'd have to agree with your take on it. Cars are generally pretty damn reliable these days and it doesn't matter who makes it for the most part.
I try to tell my grandkids how fast cars used to wear out, how quickly the fenders rusted through, how often you had to replace the tires, etc., and they can't believe it. I don't even remember my last flat tire. Modern cars are engineering marvels in my opinion... no matter how much we might complain about them.
When you have to pay more for a car than you used to pay for a house, it's about time that they made them more reliable.
The main issue now is the Korean cars. The reason they put such awesome warranties on them is because they need them to get them sold. They are notoriously unreliable and spend lots of time in the shop.
Yeah but you can buy 2 and keep one for a spare...
Love my Japanese cars. I generally buy and drive them for 10-12 years. Oil, tires, gas and the occasional battery. Wife is still driving her Tahoe, 2005 with 230K + miles on it. It has also been a remarkable vehicle. I assumed we'd have it in the shop all the time, but that hasn't been the case. It has had a few more issues, ABS for one, but overall 5 stars. We just got youngest a Beetle, crossing fingers on that one!
Our RX350 has 230k on it. Only problems 1 x sunroof repair, 1 x catalytic converter replaced.
