Super Bowl XLIX open thread. Let’s try to be polite—no insults, no profanity, no unfounded surmises about the other team’s morality and parentage, and—please!—no unfair accusations of cheating… even though the bastards in the Seahawks secondary are obviously grabbing, holding, and violating the rules on every damn play.

    • Yeah, Edelman was good and Brady had one bad throw (I felt the other interception was Gronkowski's fault for not coming back to the ball), but overall Brady was awesome. Other-worldly awesome. He beat the NFL's best defense for the last three years with no running game to help him do it. When the best defense in the NFL knows you have to pass and you still march your team down the field for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter - a quarter when nobody else all season was able to score on them at all - and drive for the go-ahead touchdown without one single incomplete pass, you are firing on all cylinders. Trent Dilfer afterward couldn't find enough superlatives and I have to agree. Dilfer said Brady was already on the Mount Rushmore of greatest NFL quarterbacks, but now he's staked a claim to being the best ever, period.

      • We could go back and forth. I'm actually a Patriots fan and I believe there needs to be one special jersey enshrined in the Patriots hall of fame- Jets number 57... Mo Lewis. Why? He laid the critical hit on Drew Bledsoe in 2001 sending him to the sidelines and breaking a rib creating the opportunity for the then little known backup from Michigan... I recall hearing the conversations, "Tom who?" Bledsoe was the much touted great hope from Washington whose visibility, and affinity for telegraphing his passes to defenses helped necessitate the shoring up of an offensive line, running game, and ability of wideouts to elude CBs which created a unique incubator for someone with some sense, like Brady, to grow and flourish.

        I recall having joked that the Pats had been cursed by Bledsoe's durability and I was proven right when Brady got his opportunity.

        • Just had to say this, everything you said is true... but as a guy who played defense it was a "clean" hit you're talking about. Couldn't help it...

      • My contention is that Brady wouldn't have done that if the first string pass defender wasn't hurt.

          • Oohhhhh. I'll pass on the North/West thing because it's old (though true), but don't be surprised if I run across a good one in the dog days of Summer. Only you and I (and a couple others) will "get it", but still.

            Oddly enough, I've never followed OSU hoops, always liked M basketball better(no joke). Shrink? lmao

          • I used to love UM basketball. My time in Ann Arbor coincided with the team that played Indiana for the national championship. Michigan's Ricky Green is thought by many people to be the fastest man to ever play the game and I was known as the fastest man in a certain campus gymnasium. We lived in two different worlds but we shared the same reputation. So when Green showed up in my gym one day, all the other courts stopped playing to watch what would happen when I went up against him. I was way too cocky back then to be nervous. I was just excited. It was all about speed and I loved speed. The thought that I might not be the fastest human being on the planet didn't even occur to me. I just walked over to that court, told the team that had next game that one of them would have to sit so I could play, and they said okay without even arguing. They knew what was about to happen and they wanted to watch it happen too. Green's team won the game they were involved in, of course, setting up the matchup everybody wanted to see, so there I was, one white guy on a court with nine black guys, about to start a game against Ricky Green, Phil Hubbard, and a couple other varsity players whose names I can't remember. And everybody in the place was watching the matchup between me and All American Ricky Green.

            Someday I might tell you what happened.

        • Not at all, I just hate it when a "face" wins the award... be s/he a celeb or not. Pisses me off that you think I even knew he went "Up North" and that played into it.

          You really, REALLY think he was the MVP?

          • Had Brady not dug the hole with two picks (though as has been rightly pointed out, only one was a bad throw) there may not have been the need to put up a goal line stand- which seemed ill fated up to Butler's heroics.

            Of course a case can be made for the Patriot defense allowing Wilson to shred them in half a minute to tie the score at the half- with them receiving the ball to start the third quarter. Sports press will fawn all over Brady gushing every superlative on him for what is quite a remarkable career... let someone else take the MVP honors.

        • Most. Valuable. Player. Of the Super Bowl... Tom Brady was sitting on the sidelines watching and cheered on his defense win the game... Your thoughts?

          (and speaking of Michigan, we got the ring this year... and kicked three straight asses.)

          • Yep... though Pete Carroll gets an "honorable" mention for arguably a curious call when he had Lynch in the backfield- though it could be argued that he was playing for four downs looking to burn the clock (why didn't Belichick stop the clock?) and blame Marshawn Lynch himself for basically telegraphing that he wasn't going to be in the play when he casually jogged to the left of and away from Wilson as the play, unfolded paring down what the Pats were to defend.

      • Edelman (and Butler's INT) bailed out Brady and his two interceptions- which would have been instrumental in a loss.

        Edit- oh yeah, Brady is a personality... got it... I'll have to make a note of that and its strategic implications in matriculating the ball down the gridiron.

        • Drove them down the field (after all his fuck-ups) so well they were on the verge of losing (less than a minute btw) and he was on the side-lines when the other team blew it, and his defense won the game? That's the mvp I want on my team... we won in spite of him, right. He should have said,"no".

          • It's not a legitimate MVP poll, it's a popularity contest.
            This shouldn't surprise you after the last 2 presidential elections.

  • Was it just me, or did that half time show seem like a hastily produced kid's show on the Disney Channel? And ending with Katie Perry in what looked like a newer model Flash Gordon space ship was just bizarre.

    But what really pissed me off was the 20 seconds they gave Lenny Kravitz. He needs a new agent...that was a slap in the face.

    BTW...I couldn't care less who won. I'm from Pittsburgh...I hate BOTH teams.

    • I could scare the hell out of my grandkids on Halloween with one of those shark costumes. The guys I was watching with wondered how much you get paid to be a big beach ball in a Katy Perry concert.

  • Bottom line: a University of Michigan quarterback is the best quarterback of all time.

  • Good game, strange play call at the goal line by Seattle, particularly when you have 59 seconds left, 1 timeout, & Lynch in the back field. On a personal note, I was happy for Seahawks WR Chris Matthews, I remember seeing him playing for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL a few times. He had a hell of a game.

    • I've been watching football for over 40 years and that was one of the most boneheaded play calls I can remember period, let alone in a Super Bowl considering the circumstances.

      • EPIC FAIL! They kept running Lynch right up the middle the entire game when they should not have. Then when they should have, they didn't. Boneheaded call X2.

Don’t forget that New England Patriots Quarterback, crybaby, and serial babydaddy Tom Brady is an avowed liberal Democrat and previously announced future plans to run for office. The deflated balls guy and Superbowler wants to perhaps run as a Democrat for the U.S. Senate from California, where he and supermodel wife/shrew Gisele Bundchen have a gazillion-dollar mega-mega-mega-mansion. But more important, don’t vote for liberal Dem Tom Brady in the future. He’s Hillary Clinton in a skirt.

    • Dude, you have issues. I don't watch football games with an eye to the political leanings of the participants. You know why? Because they don't throw it in my face like Hollywood people do. Just watch the games and enjoy, you'll live longer.

  • Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll’s nutty embrace of 9/11 Trutherism. But it gets worse. As the coach for one of two teams in today’s Super Bowl, he proclaimed that he not only believes that 9/11 was an inside job perpetrated by the U.S. Government, but that he’s an anti-war leftist in the same vein as Michael Moore. Last year, [Carroll] told the Seattle Times his feelings on how the Iraq conflict could have been handled differently in an impassioned interview. “Let’s say, after all the stuff that we heard about what was going on in Iraq, we sent 10,000 people to Iraq as peacefully as we could go,” Carroll said. “And we walked wherever they would let us go, and we just talked to people and listened to what their issues were. And then we tried to figure out the best way we could support them and change things, as opposed to bombing (expletive) thousands of people with shock and awe. It might’ve taken us longer to influence change, but nobody would’ve died.”

    Absurd.

    • If 9/11 was the presidents fault, wouldn't that prez be bill clinton, it took 3 to 4 years to plan and carry it out, Bush was in just a few months

    • Another delusional lib. Similar to Rosie O'Fats comment that fire couldn't melt the steel beams in the towers. Glad they lost. As a long time Niners fan, I usually pick the NFC to win, but not this year. I now live in WA state and have seen and heard nothing but Seahawks hype so I choose my comments carefully. Glad to see Carroll get beat and Richard Sherman go home with his trash talking loud mouth tail between his legs.
