Surprise! Leftist minimum wage policy backfires in Seattle suburb

• I saw an interesting graphic the other day. In 1964, workers were paid 5 silver quarters a hour. If workers were still paid those same 5 silver quarters a hour they would be getting paid an equivalent of $26.00 a hour.

  • Because.minimum wage, along with all other wages66 have not kept up with inflation. I remember being told in 1968 that bread would cost $3.00 in the future. I n early diversifying, because I figured no one in . Their rig h t mind would pay that. I also didn't believe cash would be replaced c.f. ed with plastic cards. Shows you how much I knew in high school l!

    • The concept of paying for bottled water was absurd as well.

      The thing about the minimum wage is that it is not for "working people trying to raise a family". It is used to set a floor for union pay scales. If a the minimum is set at $10 an hour, & a union contract states that their bottom level pay level must be at least $3 higher then minimum, & that then triggers a pay raise to the rest of the members accordingly, that becomes a big problem to a business trying stay competitive. That's also why gov't sector workers are so hellbent on supporting Dems, & why of federal, state, county, & municipal gov'ts are in trouble financially with things like pensions & benefits to retired employees. You know, often the guy who retired at 52 with a massive pension who will be paid for the next 30-some years at almost 100% OF WHAT HE WAS PAID.

      Perhaps when amnesty is enacted, the chicoms will load up 50 million prisoners and dump them from container ships in kalifornia and everyone can make $1.25 per hour.... Kumbaya!!

        • That is how this country has turned blue. By people fleeing deep blue states because the policies, taxation, & all the things that progressive Dems love doing, that these people voted for. They then go to a low tax/no tax state, & they seem to like everything about it, but they don't change their voting patterns. So they then start electing the same sort of progressives who allowed their states go into the crapper. Shifting demographics are the key to killing our constitutional republic, & that job is almost complete.

  ...I'm not sure the guys in the band had my political take on this song, because the 2 times I have met with them, politics never came up. I would be curious to know what they think, considering their native Sweden is going though some issues involving their welfare state & what it is turning into.

• That wall of reality must really hurt when you run into with the top of your head. Its called basic economics, the more things cost, the more things get cut out.

  • Like it or not, fair . Or not, businesses are there to make money, not to serve as social service providers. No business is going to take a hit like this on profits. They will reduce hours, cut or eliminate benefits, reduce staffing levels, raise prices. And this is a huge jump. It took 40 years or so to move from $1.60/ hr to $7.35/ hr. Now they want to DOUBLE the current minimum wage. Businesses won't Stand for it.

• Well, they can replace their 401k with Social Security and their health plan with Obamacare. I wonder how that will work for them.
