Craigslist, the hugely successful classified advertising website, announced last month that it no longer offer “Erotic Services” advertising after critics said it was nothing more than a forum for prostitution.
Instead of finding their prostitutes in the “Erotic Service” section, Craigslist customers will have to figure out that they are now found in the “Adult Services” category.
Jim Buckmaster, chief of Craigslist, says they’re banning sexually explicit images (replaced with merely sexually stimulating images) and offers of sex for money. And he really means it, damn it. Oh, and to prove how serious they are, they’re going to double the cost of an ad from $5 to $10.
In order to hone our investigative reportage skills, we went to our local craigslist, clicked on “adult services” and then on “women looking for men” and here are a few of the “non-prostitution” ads we found this weekend:
