‘THAT’S MY JOB’: OUTRAGED MOTHER SAYS HER DAUGHTER’S SCHOOL CROSSED THE LINE WITH PRIVACY INFRINGEMENT. Cell phones confiscated after and incident between a staff member and a student video was taken. The school’s response?
The school’s spokesperson told KATU its Standards of Student Conduct handbook permits staff to confiscate property that could be “injurious or detrimental to the safety and welfare of the students and staff.”
Yes, we bet the video’s would be injurious to the staff. Especially their bank account when they get sued. We hope everyone that had their phones confiscated and snooped in get a good attorney and sues their socks off.

The poor environment in most public schools is enough to guarantee lousy education. But the ever changing theoretical approaches to what children should d learn makes . It n e earlyimpossible for all but the brightest . Add to that enormous it s amounts of time focused on teaching to the tests as opposed to teaching content and t h e increasing number of courses required for graduation, the kids don't have as chance. Ok uhh as the DE MAND for participation in extracurricular activities and community volunteering, they are exhausted and sleep deprived and so overwhelmed that a breakup of a teen relationship is.likely to result in a suicide attempt. It's ridiculous.

You clearly on't understand that the cell phone REALLY had a hidden firearm, and they needed to review everything in the phone to insure that students and staff woul be safe! (Yawn) The school never wants anything to contradict their story about what happened. There was no reason to delete the video unless, as PsychoDad says, it would be purient or embarrasing in the way it was filmed. If the staff did the right thing, no problem. If they didn't, that needs to be addressed as well, and since the kid involved was arrested. could be exculpatory evidence. Isn't it a felony to mess with evidence?
Actually, there ARE cops out there that are taking away phones from citizens that are filming them, claiming officer safety. "There could be a weapon hidden in there." Of course, there COULD, but how often has it been documented to actually happen?
Like. . .never. it's an excuse!
Really, the only way a cell phone could be an actual weapon is if were being used to detonate a device remotely. But that is a problem our soldiers face in the middle east, our local law enforcement does not.
My wife's personal trainer....at very hot hot hot, well toned and muscled (maybe a little to much muscle) lady was telling the story of her 2nd grade daughter who was being regularly hassled on the bus by a boy. Finally the daughter told the boy that "My mom is going to beat up your mom." The funny part is that it used to be "My dad is...."
Holy crap. It hit the fan. The mom was called because this was a "threat" and the call was followed up with a formal letter from the school warning her about threats etc. I'm sure the other mother was most likely alerted to the eminent danger gasp gasp. Jeeesus, these kids are second graders.
No wonder our taxes are so goddamn high and high school graduates dont know anything. Nowdays schools have huge staffs to totally over-react with crap that kids have been doing ever since two kids got together in one place.
I wonder what they would have done if the kid said "My mom is going to beat up your DAD"!
There's a lot of guys out there that would have volunteered for that.
Slightly mixed feelings here . . . I think I can see where such a response might be warranted. If something happened in a locker room for example and a bunch of kids got filmed naked I think you'd want people all over that. And no, I DON'T think I'd trust parents with that any more than teachers.
What happened here, probably not that extreme, but I'd be willing to hear the story before jumping all over them.

It happened in the gym. Nothing the teachers did to the student being taped was out of bounds, the student swung at the teacher.
This is simply administration overreacting.
How many surveillance cameras are operating in the school? This is just like cops not wanting to be filmed. It's ok for them, but not for you. And there ARE ways to retrieve the deleted videos.
I WOULD be bringing a lawsuit, though. They went through all the apps on the phone to see if anything had been sent out? No. You can't do that. Police departments all over the country are losing lawsuits over that kind of nonsense.
