When I look at that map, one question comes to mind: WTF is up with Minnesota? It sticks out like a sore thumb.

Nope Bismarck.....Been to Minot a bunch of times when I lived there, they used to have Northern neighbors Day, an Air Show at the Minot Air Force base..Got my first Ride in a B17 during one of those..expensive but worth it..got to ride in the nose at the Bombardiers seat.....
When we talked about getting stationed at Minot, the joke was:
"Why not Minot?"
"Freezin's the reason".
It was considered a remote assignment, and you only had to pull a one year tour there.
I had friends who spent a "year" in Minot...They were the poor saps who had to stand guard on the tarmac next to B52's that were on alert...there was no where to hide at 40 below and they said it sucked. They said if you got lucky you could be near a cargo plane and crawl into the engine nacelle to get out of the cold wind..and it is always windy in Minot....
One of my customers has a son in the Air Force, he's stationed in Fairbanks Alaska. He told her that it's already -40 there!
