      • What's so thunderingly stupid, really, is the near-infantile fixation some people have on gold. Gold has no more "intrinsic" value than chalk, salt, water, or ink-decorated paper. ANY medium of exchange has value only because society agrees upon it. Until the modern electronic age, gold had virtually no practical use at all. Ironically, I think what some of these halfwits fantasize about is a good old day when THE GOVERNMENT fixed an arbitrary value for gold and let the value of paper money float around that. Gold as a commodity is certainly as volatile as any other, so there is certainly no investment security in it, or not much more than T-Bonds or pork belly futures.

        The only advantage it has a measure of value is that the amount available is relatively stable -- but that only makes it more difficult for an economy to grow. One point Ayn Rand got right is that US capitalism freed the wealth of the nation from being what the king had in the countinghouse to what every man could produce and earn for himself -- before that, wealth WAS the zero-sum game leftards seem to think it is. She, neither, overcame the consequent juvenile non sequitor of gold-infatuation.

        I've said infantile and juvenile, perhaps I should settle on pre-pubescent instead, as the gold-infatuation is much more like an 11 year old boy's sudden discovery of and fascination with ladies' bosoms. Just like that, he finds them exciting and arousing, but with no clear idea of exactly what they're for, how they work, or if he'll ever get a handful.
