The Nation: The Robin Hood Tax, A Powerful Antidote to Austerity

The Nation: The Robin Hood Tax, A Powerful Antidote to Austerity: Yeah, also a powerful antidote to jobs and economic growth. But that doesn’t concern the kleptocrats. They don’t care about taxes trickling down to the middle class. Not so long as it means that someone is going to be on the hook to pay for their handouts.

      • @John

        So you're a supporter of Laissez-faire?

BTW, in case your forgot . . .

And raising the minimum wage combats inflation exactly how? The increased cost of production incurred by labor has to either be absorbed by the producers or transferred to the consumer. Of course you can’t be suggesting that these greedy corporations are going to eat the cost . . . I mean they are after all “greedy corporations”. So the net effect of this policy is a driving up of the cost of living. Which is, in party, why the value of our dollars are diminished.

I am also curious as to how corporate greed is driving this inflation. Of course there are reasons to be made for this suggestion. But do you understand them? Can enumerate them? What is the Austrian perspective on the matter in relation to that of macro? And how is it the case that rampant consumerism can be attributed to the fair market system when that approach to economics would likely have produced interest rates forcing savings and austerity rather than cheap money and indiscriminate stimulus of sectors supposedly in glut.

      • Libertarian? Erm... you keep using that word, Gollum. I do not think it means what you think it means.

    • Oh, john.

      Now, honey, listen...

Getting a job and making something of yourself = Good!
Wallowing in self-indulgent, misdirected anger and bitterness = Bad!

Getting a job requires being able to demonstrate certain skills. Today, how about you and I work on efficiency? Bosses like to know that their employees can get the job done well with minimal expense and fuss. So that you can build up that necessary skill, from here on out I am challenging you to do the following: Every time you want to leave a comment at this site, simply click on the comment link, type a period (.) and hit "submit." Everybody will know, "Oh, there's another Corporate Greed (TM john) post.", so you needn't worry that we might not know what you meant to say. You will thus save time and cyberspace all in one. Efficiency!

Once you've got this mastered, we can move on to other important job-seeking skills, like, "How not to reveal too early that your education wasn't particularly top-notch."

        • Shhhhhh, you two. We need to encourage him, not discourage him! Think about the benefits of having him spend much more of his time pounding the pavement as he goes job hunting... spending time outside in the sunshine might actually help clear those fuzzy cobwebs in his head away AND that would keep him off his computer. It's a total win-win!

          • It won't work, he's waiting for the next census to happen because he now has experience and "seniority"!

          • Heh. So, he's sorta like a resident of Brigadoon when it comes to getting out there and working, huh?

          • I wish he'd been the census-taker that came to my RV in San Diego to try to get info from me. I stood with my arms crossed, feet about shoulder width apart, and every time he asked a question, I said, "Two."

Go ahead, prosecute me for giving only the information required.

          • That's about what happened to me when the census taker came to my house.
He kept asking questions from a clipboard, and I said, "I already sent my forms in, that's all you are getting from me".

          • Here's a little treat, from Stockton California, several people that were hired to do the census were later caught burglarizing the homes they went to, they got paid to scope out houses they could come back to and steal from. So would you let someone in your home and answer a bunch of questions about when you work etc to someone who probably wants to steal your tv and guns? I did the same as you, two people live here, now go about your business elsewhere or I will help you off my property...Once they get their answer to the one question they can ask, they need to go.

          • It was all just a scheme to get john and his kindred spirits out of their mother's basements and garages.

          • The census worker who came to my house was genuinely offended that I refused to give any information beyond what I had to. She was particularly hung up on the fact that I wouldn't state a "race" for anyone in my family. She asked it over and over again, and I kept on saying, "human." And the really stupid part was, I told her as soon as she identified herself that I'd already mailed in the form so her visit was redundant, but she wouldn't go away!

Actually, the REALLY stupid part, in my opinion, was the letter we got telling us we would be soon getting the census form, followed by the census form itself, followed by a reminder letter to send the census form in. I couldn't figure out if this was some wacky government plan to bolster our floundering postal service, or what.

          • But, they were persistant bastards! I had to get downright nasty to get rid of the guy. Same thing happened last census when I still lived in NJ. Some of these jackasses are indoctrinated leftists that think they have a right to all your personal info.

          • Well thanks you two for providing employment to not only one census taker but to 5 or so. Because if you just answered the questions the first time around, the government would not have had to pay 4 more people to do the same thing.

          • I love the way you work with the children, Jenn. So gentle, yet persuasive.

Me, I just call them idiots. I'm just a big meanie.

          • *frowns sternly*

Gollum! Come here, honey. I've got some nice, fresh fish for you to eat. I know how much you like it and there's a reason it's known as "brain food." I think you've been chewing on those old Orc bones for way too long now and you've managed to get yourself severely malnourished. It's making you cranky and clouding your judgment even more than normal.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of real idiots with jobs out there. That's the way it is. Honestly, that should really give you hope, bless your withered little heart. All is not lost for you!

          • Temporary census worker is not a job. It is government busy work like digging canals with spoons.

          • So I'm a fucking moron for having a job and a lazy freeloader for not? Way to be hypocritical.

          • Because you're a fucking moron.
By law the only question you have to answer is how many people live in your house. Anything beyond that is invasion of privacy.

          • All they're legally empowered to get an answer to is how many people live in the house. I answered, sent it in and I still had a moron show up. I told him what I just wrote and shut the door.

          • Idiot. The lowlife bastards were walking around the neighborhood bothering everyone. They came to my place, I gave them the answer to every question they are allowed to ask under the law.

          • Why did you dislike. I was thanking you, because of your stubbornness, you helped create jobs. More jobs then Romney will ever create.

      • John's too lazy and whiny to hold a job I'm afraid. Any HR person worth their salt would weed this idiot out just by the resume, no interview required. If it did happen to get as far as an interview, I'm thinking it would be an unmitigated disaster.

    • Despite the fact that I have a martial arts background, I am not violent at all but for you, john, I'd make an exception and spar with you without any protective gear. You seriously are an idiot.

  • Robin Hood was fighting against unjust taxes.

Why does his name get flung around by people who want to raise taxes?

  • "The Nation", the magazine for aging leftists who still think communism wasn't given a fair chance to succeed and that Joe Stalin was misunderstood. Anyone who takes the ideas of these clowns seriously needs to be teleported to the gulag.

  • At "The Nation", they also think laxatives are the antidote for diarrhea and cyanide is the antidote for food poisoning. But then, they also think the USSR was a big success and was only dismantled because it was making capitalism look bad. Undoubtedly, they are convinced the EU is failing because Germany keeps asking Greece and Spain for bailouts.
