The worst honeymoon in history, even worse than the Editor’s

Eleven years ago this month, on the first morning of the Editor’s honeymoon, he turned on CNBC (yeah, he’s a romantic devil) only to discover that the two stocks in which he had just invested had both plummeted. The new Mrs. Editor assumed that his sudden, deep depression was an indication that he regretted the marriage.

Although that seemed horrible at the time, both stocks eventually recovered as did the Editor’s mood, and the honeymoon was saved. And in retrospect, that little financial glitch was nothing compared to the honeymoon described in this Associated Press story:

Stefan Svanstrom of Stockholm said Tuesday he set out on a 4-month-long honeymoon with his wife Erika and their baby girl on Dec. 6 and immediately got stranded in Munich, Germany, due to one of Europe’s worst snowstorms.

After that, he says, they experienced the devastation of a cyclone in Cairns, Australia, and the flooding in Brisbane, and narrowly escaped the bush fires in Perth.

Just before arriving in New Zealand, Svanstrom says, the 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit Christchurch and at the couple’s last destination, Tokyo, they felt Japan’s largest temblor since records began.

Feel free to share you honeymoon horror stories.

Oh, and happy anniversary, Mrs. Editor.

  • My first marriage was like playing a game of cards. It started out with 2 hearts and a diamond but by the end, all I wanted was a club and a spade.

  • Happy Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. E, and just remember, it's all in the way you look at it: when life deals you lemons, make lemonade! For the Svantsroms, it wasn't one disaster after another it was one long adventure!

    • After I make lemonaid out of those lemons I add a generous amount of vodka. I'm too old for adventure, I prefer peace and quiet!

      • Lemonade and vodka...now, that sound pretty tasty whiskeyriver. I'm going to have to try that for myself.

          • Your local bartender may know how to make a "salty dog". It's almost the same thing but they now use a mix instead of using grapefruit juice or lemonade.

        • Believe it or not: Salt the rim of your glass like you would for a margarita and the combination makes for an interesting taste.

  • Tell them not to come to my area. Maybe they could go to Tehran, I hear it's lovely in May, the flowers bloom, the spring burkas are in season, etc.

  • I would not want to sell that guy any kind of insurance...
But he might want to let us all know where they're traveling next so we avoid that hemisphere.

    Happy Anniversary!

  • No honeymoon horror story here. My husband and I will be married 20 years in June and together for 27 this coming December, it is still a honeymoon even after three children and struggling to make sure I can remain the stay at home mom our kids deserve. Love, respect, compromise and communication are the keys. Happier Anniversaries to come ~!

  • The best of wishes to Mr. Ed and Mrs. Ed. May all your anniversaries be MUCH better than this couple's honeymoon.

  • The first thing that struck me in this story is that Sweden (if not the birthplace, certainly the summer home of the modern European Socialist movement*) somehow allowed a couple to get rich enough to afford a 4 month long honeymoon.

The only explanation I could think of is these two must both work for the Swedish government.

    * See Wikipedia - Economy of Sweden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Sweden): "The typical worker receives only 40% of his income after the tax wedge."

  • "Feel free to share you honeymoon horror stories."

    It would take too long.

Happy Anniversary to Mr & Mrs Editor!
