      • Agree it is heavily produced, however when I worked in Sarasota, I had several employees that were Amish, they told me back in the 80's about the 'Amish Aid' and how corrupt it was. I want to view them as simplistic, honest and devout ... sigh, not the case.

        • I don't know much about the Amish, but I have had some personal experience with the Mormons. They rescued my sorry ass out of the desert when my truck broke down while hauling my RV in Amboy, CA. The truck was at the nearest diesel mechanic, in Yucca Valley, for thirteen days.

          The daytime temps hovered around 125, but at night it got all the way down to a hundred. I didn't have enough gas in my generator tanks to run the AC. It was a survival test.

          On the tenth day, Mormons noticed me, sent for a one ton pickup with a fifth wheel hitch, and rescued me. They hauled me and the trailer to Yucca Valley, paid for a month at an RV park. They refused to even let me put fuel in their truck. So this was about five hundred dollars they spent on me, and refuse to allow me to repay it. Just because I was in trouble.

          I knew that the Mormon Church took care of their own, but I had no idea that they did things like this for people outside the church. Yes, they did ask if they could send some missionaries over to talk to me about my religion. How could I refuse? No, I 'm still not a Mormon, but I know a little more about them than most non-Mormons do. If I ever strike it rich, I'm going to make an anonymous donation to the Yucca Valley ward.

          • Yes, some Mormons live the life they espouse and are really good people. I personally don't think my job is to work toward having my own planet, but hey, to each his own.And yes, they do extend a helpoing hand to others. Its part of their outreach and evangelism, as well as reflecting well on the church as a whole.

  • I must admit that if I wanted my family to follow the example of any culture, none of those listed in her article as superior, are what I would steer them toward, with the possible exception of the Mormons. I think the Amish are far and away the best of the group. They are completely self sufficient, and have the best chance of surviving any serious calamity. They have their own bank, and nobody is capable of stealing their money. They are completely cooperative, and support each other to the exclusion of anyone else. They are very smart, and value education. Their only downfall is that they are so close knit that there is a possibility of inbreeding, because they don't have a wide enough variety of bloodlines to choose from.

    • That's only the beginning. They believe an education beyond middle school is. Unnecessary. Everyone is expected to eventually have a farm, but there isn't enough land available, so they are separating themselves from their base to try and make a living. They are a h a reworking, respectful group the whole but they really look down on the "English," Or anyone not Amish. But they are happy to have English money coming in.

  • My cousin is married to a pompous and smug Chinese woman. She will let you know in a New York minute, how much more advanced she is, smarter she is, that she is fluent in SEVEN languages ... she is - UGH, blah, blah, blah. She totally RUNS HIS LIFE ( and no, I haven't the slightest idea why he puts up with it ) Their kids, no doubt will be instilled with her drive, which to some degree I respect ... SOME DEGREE. I really hate that American families have lost good old traditional values ( thanks you WORTHLESS libs and all your BS ) and now indoctrinate their children to think that world revolves around them, and that they are totally exempt for societal norms and rules.

    • In hindsight, I remembered she was 10 when she arrived here in the US, no doubt took TOTAL ADVANTAGE of all our gov't 'assistance' to Vietnamese citizens ( which legally she is ) and that is how she became educated with a Masters in Engineering. She commands a hefty salary as an engineering consultant, although I notice she has no stability with any one firm. No doubt her less-then charming personality plays a part in that.

    • The best way to put her in her place is to ask if things are so great in China why in the hell is she here. Then ask her to count to 100 in her seven languages. One of my closest friends is also married to a Chinese woman. She is not mouthy, running his life and is grateful as can be that she is in America and not in some city in China. She too speaks at least three languages and has a degree in International Finance. Some women just think they are all that no matter what nationality they are. Trust me, my Ex was one and I know she wasn't something that special. Born and raised in the hills.

    • Binding. Hate incorrect! She is American, her Husband is Jewish American. I somehow doubt she even begins to have any real experience of the societies she imagines. Mormons look good on paper, but have a dark side of domestic abuse and highly controlling the behaviour of its adherents. There is always another side. She seems to be unaware of that.

There are some groups of people regardless of their cultural background that make it in life through hard work and through ingenuity, there are millions of Asians and many in China that live turd lives and they don't value their lives and the government don't give a sh*t about them because they don't give a sh*t about themselves... People just need to stop with this crap it doesn't serve a good purpose.

      I don't know... How many Asians have you heard of playing the "Knock Out Game"? What responsible parent allows their kids run wild on the street, assaulting strangers? Kid's need to be at home, busting their hump over their homework. What's free in life, other than an Obama phone for the slaves? Sure, I've seen a lot of Vietnam gangs and Cuban gangs and Mexican gangs -- but I've also seen scores (if not hundreds) of immigrant families living in crowded apartments sending their kids to school to SUCCEED, not to be flipping burgers all their lives. LOTS of immigrants work 2-3 jobs to succeed, not picket McD's for $15/hour jobs! The asswipes who were in the Wall Street protests were suckers and tools of the Democrat party -- who have a real nasty habit of making their voters slaves.

      Chinese, Jewish, Mormons, Cuban exiles, etc. -- they all know the value of hard work and they RIGHTFULLY should reap the fruit of their endeavors. If someone is willing to work 2 jobs and go to school on top of that, why shouldn't they receive plaudits? The power of family and honor really do count for something.

      As for Hatians, Jamacians, Mexican Mafia, Cartel runners, etc. They're like blood sucking body lice. Unwelcome and unwanted. Nigerians on the list...geesh! Americans are spoiled. How do I know? Obama was elected for a second term. Americans think they live in Disneyland, but the bill collector is going to show up one of these days.

      • I know of many Chinese people here and in other countries and in China who are criminals, who are evil people and do evil things. So I don't quite know how AS A WHOLE PEOPLE Chinese are "superior" to anyone. Add to that the forced abortions, the persecution of Christians and putting them all in prison even babies to prevent the spread of Christianity and the fact that they tax or imprison people for having more than one child... again they are "superior" in what way again?

        Do we know FOR SURE that NO ASIAN person who lives in the ghetto has played the KOG? And even if NO ASIAN person at all have played this so called game so what? That proves what exactly? Have YOU heard of the MANY prolific and DANGEROUS Asian gangs in this country? Uhm...? You should. As a people they aren't "superior" to any other people.

        Your entire dissertation means that SOME people in some cultures or religious backgrouns are really to work hard for what they can get. There are many people in the Black community that do that (like Ben Carson, Allen West, etc), there are many people in the White community or Asian or whatever that do not. Individuals no matter their background if they want to succeed and are willing to work hard, do succeed. This crap about one group of people being superior to others is talk that leads to slavery and people killing "lesser" people. It is dangerous. This little b*tch is not better than me and I can assure you that no one here is better than me. We are all the same. Some of us will have to work a little harder than others and we all have different gifts, but if we have the will and the drive regardless of the "people" that we come from we will make it while others in the same group will not. Also the fact that more and more humans are less and less one kind of people or belong to one kind of people, this entire dissertation about superiority will become moot. I give it another 50 to 100 years where it will be impossible for people to truly be considered as a one thing over another.

        • Exactly. There are plenty of valid reasons to criticize any group of people, just as there are plenty of good reasons to praise them. To stoop to a blanket generalization based upon some racist members of a group's actions is to do what the Democrats do vis a vis institutionalized racism.

          And to quote David Catron, their record is not good in that regard: "The Democrat record regarding the underprivileged isn’t pretty. They defended slavery, enforced racial segregation, opposed women’s suffrage, and still chain low-income students to public schools that teach them virtually nothing. It shouldn’t be surprising, then, that the Democrats have created a health “reform” program that denies poor people access to decent medical care."

          So don't do it. I consider the KOG to be race baiting -- and have no doubt that the true intent is to goad decent people into a rage, and then use that rage as "evidence" of racism in the Right. Typical Democrat strategy -- cynically manipulate race and divide people in order to profit.

      • Ever had a run in with a Chinese TONG, or an Asian gang? There are good and bad elements in any culture, race, creed,whatever. That's why you don't make blanket assumptions.

    • Lots of people have heard of her "tiger mom" system of child rearing. She essentially espouses Psychological torture as the ideal way to raise exceptional children. She's a lawyer from Yale. That explainable.

      • To be honest, she's a first class b-word. While it is good to push your kid to succeed, her thing is to abuse her kid(s), and whitewash it by telling them it's for their own good.

        I believe in karma, and therefore, I also believe that she has a fine future in a crappy nursing home alone ahead of her.

  • Oh for Pete's sake, she's making the old first generation immigrants work hard argument. My observation is that self-selected immigrant waves have three good generations including the one that actually crossed over. After that the achievement bug abates in most families. I do think the Jews are the exception to that rule because they always live with the fear that whatever they earn can be taken from them. That's why they take education seriously. Professional degrees can't be confiscated. That's not cultural superiority, it is self-preservation in that case.

  • There is one possible major flaw in her analysis. There is a passing mention of the success rate of groups that come to America.

    Well, Indians are not coming to America. More specifically, well-educated and already successful Indians are coming to America in disproportionate numbers. The assumption that the immigrants from India, Iran, Nigeria, or anywhere else are equally representative of all levels of education, IQ, ability, drive, etc. in their home country is arbitrary and can not serve as a basis for drawing any rational conclusions.

    Her assumptions also seem to assume that the societies on either end of the immigration route just spontaneously occured. No, they were created by the people who lived there. So she's looking at Chinese here in the USA and seeing success. Good observation, IMO. But who created the economic infrastructure for that success. Hint: it wasn't the Nigerians. And why did they leave their country? If they are so damn superior, why isn't their country more attractive for success than this one?

    Yeah, yeah, I know that India, China, and many other countries are up-and-coming. But let's not forget that the main reason they are up-and-coming is because they are becoming more like us. As in US.

    • Exactly. Everything you said is accurate. Believing that some people are superior because they made it in a country like the US is BS considering that they LEFT their countries that many times tend to be cesspools and those that stay don't have the willingness to make the changes necessary to stop being a cesspool. Those that may want to make the changes cannot due to many issues and therefore leave and through hard work make it. Not everyone is the same. This is BS.

    • A lot of Indians are now moving back to India. It's like Silicon Valley II there and they're going to take advantage of it.

      • The Indians I know (and it is a lot living in Tampa) is they are white collar versions of the Mexican peons who come here to take menial jobs. They aren't interested in citizenship necessarily and they want to make what they can and then cash out and move home. They are very tribal in that they do not mix well with us natives and they grind their kids academically so they can go to a good college before heading home.

        I think the parents will have a hard time convincing the kids to leave. Despite the parents' best efforts, many of the kids do Westernize.
