  • From all apperances, ol Piers let his dump truck mouth write a check his wheelbarrow ass couldn't cash.

Humiliated and left all curled up like a baby. It's no wonder the British ran his ass out of England. He can't even play the national sport of cricket. Bravo to the "pitcher" for all the knock downs. he had on all that equipment too. Pussy

  • I don't get it. Is the guy purposely hitting him with the ball, or is he just a wild inaccurate pitcher? If this is on purpose, I feel admiration and jealousy at the same time.

    • No to both, I think. Without getting too deep into how cricket is played, the bowler (NOT the pitcher -- bowling requires the elbow be kept straight) has two basic strategies to defeat the batsman: 1) to actually break the wicket, which he did at one point, but it was a "no-ball," meaning the bowler stepped too far over his own creases, so it didn't count, or 2) to make the ball skip off the ground in such a manner that the batsman can't anticipate which way it will go, and result either in the ball slipping by and breaking the wicket (back to 1), or that he will hit it incorrectly, resulting in the ball being caught and an out (just as baseball), or that he will not hit it far enough that he and his partner can complete a run. In the actual game, two batsmen are up at once, at opposite ends, and they must run from end to end to complete a run. What we saw here was a practice area. Unlike baseball, the batsmen are NOT obligated to run when the ball is hit, and so stay at bat for much longer than baseball batters. It is not uncommon for a batsman to score a hundred runs or more during his time up.

OK. Now. Hard to tell exactly what I was seeing. The one guy pretty much called it when he said Piers just wasn't playing well, moving forward to the ball rather than backing up a bit. It DID look to me that some of those deliveries were "wide" (the nearest equivalent of a foul ball), meaning too far to the side to be considered good balls. That would be when they scooted way off to the right and beaned dickface. Now that was a bit odd, as Lee there is what's called a pace or fast bowler, whose style is usually to bowl it as fast as possible (he's one of the fastest bowlers in the world), and that usually calls for a pretty straight delivery, not "spin" bowling, which moves the ball slower and gets it spinning so that it does skip off dramatically to the left or right.

He was also bowling "short," I think, which means it was hitting the ground quite a distance in front of the wicket, meaning that by the time it got down to the creases, it had bounced fairly high up into the air.

So -- I think that's what he was doing, bowling fast and short very aggressively, as close to the batsman as possible, so that yes, he was more or less targeting the body. However, a batsman of comparable skill would NOT have been beaten up so badly as dickface was, he would have been able to deflect those balls safely, or use the speed and direction to get a good hit in and keep them going to his rear. Again, unlike baseball, the action is in the center of the field, and there is no "foul" territory, you can hit it straight, 90 degrees either side, or even straight back. (Remember this is just a practice area they're in.) I don't think Lee was deliberatley trying to hit him, but doofus there couldn't avoid it.

So bottom line -- dickface set himself up to look like a goof, and he did THAT splendidly.

        • Hey, here y'all go. Here's the man himself, Brett Lee, one of the world's greatest bowlers, bowling to Sachin Tendulkar, one the greatest batsman in the world!

Oh, despite what I said above, if the ball goes to the boundary of the field, it is automatically counted as 4 runs, and the batsmen do NOT have to actually run them back and forth.

          • I'll say that Tendulkar might be the greatest batsman of all time. I do catch BBC Sportworld on weekends & when they discuss cricket, the historians will say either Tendulkar or Aussie Donald Bradman. I don't know much about the game, but I do know just a little, & I know Morgan was in waaaaaay over his head.

          • Okay, I watched the video and I still don't get it. How do you ever get rid of the batter? Why are there no fielders stopping the ball after it's hit? WTF IS GOING ON? And here's my biggest question of all: why in the bloody hell does the pitcher (excuse me, "bowler") RUN so damn far before throwing the ball? Don't these people understand basic physics, that all that running will not make the ball go faster? Sheesh. Craziest sport I've ever seen.

          • It wouldn’t have mattered even if Lee had bowled Morgan with a legal delivery; this wasn’t an over in a game but a challenge whereby Morgan would prove that he was braver than some batsmen on the English team by facing an over’s worth of aggressive bowling. Lee was deliberately targeting Morgan’s body—to the extent of following Morgan and thereby bowling wide—because that was the whole point of the exercise.

          • You get rid of the batter by breaking the wicket, which the bowler did once, he knocked over the yellow stick.

          • Here's the same 2 in a longer clip: http://youtu.be/R8G5dh-f_4I

In some of the slo-mo, you can see how the balls skips off to the sides. You will also hear the commentators refer to "bouncers" which is what he was doing to dickface, an "Yorkers," which are the opposite, hitting the ground very far down the pitch and close to the wicket.

          • I don't pretend to begin to understand cricket, but I did enjoy watching asshole get the crap beat out of him!

          • I don't get cricket either, but I do appreciate it when a putz gets hit by a fast flying object....Wonder of we could have the democraps in congress try out for cricket?

          • So there's only a batsman and a bowler on the field at one time? How often do they change them out? Guess I need to visit a cricket website to learn more. Can you recommend one for newbies that will esplain' it all to me? I've given up on football, don't care for soccer or baseball, cycling...eh not to hot for TV and spotty coverage at best.

          • No, this is just a little practice venue. Look at the links I provided. There are actually two batsmen on the field at once in a real game, and 11 in the field, including the bowler.

The bowlers have to swap out after each over (6 deliveries), and a batsman plays until he's out, but because of rather different rules, that can be a long time, scoring a hundred runs is not unusual.

  • And here I was hoping it was some 90 year old lady kicking him in his non-existent balls. But on a brighter side, I bet he goes into a tizzy about those assault cricket balls.

  • I saw this on Mediate earlier today, & what is sad is Morgan doesn't know when to shut his mouth. He's getting his ass kicked, & is too damn dumb to know when to shut up. Getting hit with a cricket ball being bowled in the 75-85 mph range & he does not know when to say when, is stupid. He went into someone else's arena on almost got himself killed. He's just lucky he didn't go into 1 of Ted Nugent's arenas, he might very well end up the worse for wear as well.
