Unemployment rate down to 8.3% as more fall out of labor force

Unemployment rate falls to 8.3%. The MSM will be trumpeting the 8.3% rate as evidence the economy is improving (and reason to reelect their boyfriend Barry) but it’s really a reflection of even more people leaving the labor force. If BO can get enough unemployed job seekers to retire or go live under bridges, the headline U3 number will be 5% by election day.

Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

    • Ummm, yeah that was 30 years ago and the 1981 recession was a garden variety Fed-induced interest rate recession rather than a debt deflation. And since we're comparing idiot news broadcasts, the rest of the media made a very large deal of a much milder recession in 1991-92 (worst economy in decades!) when Bush 41 was president as well as a much lower unemployment rate (and they're all lousy hamburger flipping jobs!) when Bush 43 was president so a little Fox News hyperbole is fair play.

      • Rob intellectually maxed out at the stated unemployment figure. Since that is good enough to suit his ideological view: analysis complete. Adding 50% to the debt and inflating the currency. Pfffft. Not important to the health of the economy. Thirty year low employment participation rate? Pssshaw. 1,200,000 dropped from the count? It's all good because the "official" number is coming down.

    4) Mocks Christianity
    5) Speaks about the Nobel Muslim
    6) Subtly creates division among the posters, making them argue among themselves
    7) Brings up the fact that the Dear Leader is the best speaker ever to grace this planet
    8 ) reports anythin said to ATTAAAACCCKKK WAAAATTCCCHHHH
    9) Work in the idea that it is all the Republican's fault, because they won't let Obama Passthatbill
    10) Make snide remarks about how the Constitution is out of date
    11) Talk about how Capitalism doesn't work ANYWAY

    ANYONE CAN PLAY FROM ANYWHERE! (Except a government sponsored cell phone, since you won't have enough internet time to actually post anything. Also government sponsored internet from home might not work, since the speed would be too slow and the signals too spotty for internet access. Try a local library! Though if there are no private donations to said library, a player may have to use an APPLE IIe to get online.)

    • Thinking through a situation isn't your strong suit is it? Tell you what - you go back and look at the total unemployment figures (bls.gov is a good starting point) - pay particular attention to the number of long-term unemployed and the U6 calculation - then reread your post and then, finally, punch yourself in the face for being a trolling jackass. 'K?

    A major take-away:
    "The official unemployment rate is 8.3%. However, if you start counting all the people that want a job but gave up, all the people with part-time jobs that want a full-time job, all the people who dropped off the unemployment rolls because their unemployment benefits ran out, etc., you get a closer picture of what the unemployment rate is. That number is in the last row labeled U-6.

    U-6 is much higher at 15.1%. Both numbers would be way higher still, were it not for millions dropping out of the labor force over the past few years."

    That's one of my big pet peeves. The economy during the first seven years of Bush was pretty good. And yet the media always acted like the sky was falling. People are dropping out of the workforce in despair during the Obama years and yet the media act like happy days are here again. IMO, the media is beyond being just biased, it's corrupt.
