Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

  • I guess I am slow on the uptake. I know early unions were indeed formed by commmunists, but the corrected some seriously horrendous abuse of coal minerrs, workshop employees, etc. Getting fair pay and some level of benefits and pension for them. Now however, they don't want fair pay. They want pay far in excess of the training and ability required to do some of their jobs. I don't feel a guy putting a screww in a hole should be paind in excess of someone with a college degree in say Nursing or Teaching (note not all teachers are unionized!)So here are my questions and comments:

    1. If union membership is so fantastic, why do people have to be forced to join? One would think they would be stanidng in line at the union office door.
    2. I live in a right-to-wwork state. The people NOT in the union do not benefit from union contracts. They have no legal representation if they are fired or disciplined unfairly, they have fewer benefits (overall) and make lower salaries. So why are unions so unpopular with WORKERS here?
    3. The "progreessives are all about choice. Choice to marry or not. Choice to abort a pregnancy or not (regardless of the father's feeling on the procedure) choice to have legalized drugs. So why ae they so against choice to join a union or not? Seems just a touch inconsistent to me.

  • It's time for union members to realize that they are not the end all be all. Second, if you want to act like a raging dick, you are going to be treated like one. If you resort to violence your ass is going to jail and be prosecuted.

    • I agree with all but your last sentence, but wish you were right about that too. If, on the off chance these "raging dick's" are prosecuted by a jury, some judge will simply overturn the decision and go home to find a new Ferrari in his driveway. Which of course is better than if he doesnt overturn the decision, as he leaves for home and turns on the ignition there will be a loud boom, flash of fire, and a judgeship position open for some pro-union pro-democrat sleazebag.

  • I hope Crowder sues these desperate bastards. They and the degenerate democrats feed off each other, like malignant tumors, and are now in danger of losing their cash cow. Good. How brave they are in large crowds.

    • Steven Crowder should work to get a nice payment in the high 7 figures from the unions involved. It's not like it's THEIR money they spend anyway.

  • Crowder is experienced in MMA/wrestling. He has (seriously) challenged this guy to a one-on-one bout for charity, and will not press charges if the union guy agrees to it. ROFL! So, no sucker punches and no backup of other old fat white guys covering his coward butt! I hope the scumbag agrees to it, and I hope Steven kicks his butt all over the place!

    • Saw a clip of him somewhere last night, man has more self control than me I think. He said besides being mad as hell all he could think about was if he cleaned the guys clock the mob would kill him, not beat, kill. And I thought I heard him say his wife (?) was there in that tent maybe, and all he wanted to do was get her out of there in one piece.

  • He is lucky he didnt get a serious injury. They could have truly did him and others harm. Considering what mobs always do and what they have recently done this was incredibly stupid of him. You cannot do this (go into mobs) and not expect violence at least not anymore. Once the numbers increased if they were there they should have gotten out or at least pretend to be liberals fools and Crowder should not been there as he is known. Anyone who see sthis how can you stand by the Unions anymore? (Yes there are some that are not bad but they are now in a silent minority)

  • Fat, middle aged white men rioting and beating up their opponents, it's the Tea Party! It's the Brownshirts! It's the Klan!....No, it's Democrat controlled unionistas.

    • Democrats were the Klan, unions are essentially socialists so that also means brownshirts so to speak. The only thing to truly contrast them with is the Tea Party which of course was never part of anything like this ever.

      • Of course the Tea Party never rioted or smashed things, in fact the Tea Party cleaned up the grounds when their demonstrations were over. But Democrats and their lying MSM allies always depicted the Tea Party as Brownshirts (remember when Nacy Pelosi accused them of waving swastikas?) or racist Klansmen (even though the Klan was the military arm of the Democrat Party). This latest union violence will be ignored or excused by MSNBC and the other networkds

  • I am convinced that the average IQ of union members is about 42. I know there are some (damn few) that actually could hold a job without some corrupt-union strong arming the management, but it is the 98% like these that give the rest of union members a bad name. I'll bet most of these assholes are unemployed because they drove their employer out of business or out of the state. Useful idiots!

    • I used to be a member of the IBEW, when we had our monthly meetings, I felt like a conservative college professor in a nursery school.

      I will say this about the construction unions though, they have very serious and comprehensive training programs for their members that keeps them apprised and knowlegable in the current codes and safety practices. You can pretty much guarantee that if your electric is done by an IBEW member, you will have no worries about shoddy workmanship. The same goes for the carpenters, steelworkers, pipefitters, carpenters, etc unions. They make sure that their work is worth what they are paid.
      Not so much for the public service unions.

      • Let's not forget the Operating Engineers. 35 years I was a member, and I saw very little thuggishness, at least in Local 12. Then again, we had a membership with the gonads to tell our leadership no once in a while.

        The apprenticeship I completed was excellent, taught by instructors who had been there, done that, and wanted us to be the cream of the crop. Some of the men that I still to this day have tons of respect for were instructors in that program. We learned how to make as much money for our employers as possible, and do it safely.

        As much as I'm against what a lot of the unions are doing today, I'm still proud of my 35 years in I.U.O.E. Local 12

        • there's nothing intrinsically wrong with unions. Just as jcrowley should realize there's nothing intrinsically wrong with corporations. At best, they should serve to balance each other along with government, and there are bad actors in all types of organizations

          • All depends on the person at the helm doesn't it? I like to think I could run a very fair, profitable corp. if I ever got that lucky and found my "pet rock". But I know a lot of people who'd get a downright "hard-on" (sorry) screwing people right & left with that kind of power and influence.

          • My apprenticeship instructors instilled in me the desire to make as much money as possible for the rich guy signing my paychecks. Some unions, not so much. And I don't believe public sector unions should exist at all. The parameters for negotiations aren't the same.

          • Public Sector unions shouldn't even exist. They are redundant. The government regulates everything in government jobs, salary, promotion, benefits, job requirements, and arbitration.
            It's just a way for them to try to control the political process.

          • if he just said something like corporate executive greed, then we'd be on to something.. there's been a pretty broad pattern of executives extracting more and more from their companies at the expense of shareholders and employees. I believe the markets for executive compensation have been distorted. I appreciate it when a company thrives, pays out dividends, and compensates its workers fairly.. That's good business all around. You seem like you'd be that kind of guy, yeah
