  • women should NEVER be allowed to serve on war ships period. i am sorry for those of you who have daughters that are serving, and might not like to hear this,but the amount of stress that one has to go thru during a "war" is a level of hell that no one should have to deal with...having women aboard only compacts the stress level. i dont care what any of you think if u disagree with me, and i love women serving in the usn,but there needs to be strict rules,especially during a 'war" if that's what u want a still call it. the pansy,PC world that the military has become is a living joke. gender-neutral!? wow...what dumb fuck thought of that? how about the usn end giving women a one year maternity leave while every other sailor has to step up for the women gone,and then throwing the rest on the backs of the reserve!?!? whatever i dont care anymore. if u diasagree with me u dont understand because youve never been to hell and back.

  • The Fast Attack boat I was on didn't have any urinals, just eight toilets for 110 guys. Usually just stood up and peed in the bowl. Those boomer guys, though, I heard that they were all "Squat-to Pees". Hope the ladies don't mind us guys peeing on the seat!

  • Sorry ladies but women have no business serving on a warship. The high stress, the long working hours, just being in the presense of young men and no place to go, lead to problems. Our Navy is spending millions of dollars per year paying women while on "maternity leave" and that is not right. Someone has to pick up the slack when any sailor is not able to stand his duty and pregnant women just get in the way or put the burden on someone else.

    Women fill a vital role in our military but serving on a ship is not one of them. Stay on shore girls, you can play with the real sailors when we hit port.

    • I agree with you. In fact, I think that there are a LOT of places that women do not belong, including men's locker rooms. I am no "barefoot and pregnant" woman- my mother was a lawyer, my sister is an engineer, my daughter is a PhD candidate in Robotics/AI and I am a psychologist - but there are some jobs that are just not suitable for women.

      I remember many years ago one of the New England states was desperate for female fire fighters. They HAD to fill a certain number of positions to meet the new laws. But they could simply not find women who were capable of carrying 200 lbs down a ladder (among other things). They finally had to relax the requirements to carry 100lbs. down the ladder, in order to accommodate women. I am not a huge woman, but I weigh more than 100 lbs, and I can tell you this: if I were unconscious and needed rescuing, I want the guy who can easily take me down. I would not be high five-ing the woman and saying "well, I'm gonna die, but lets roar together, sister." If she can carry 200 lbs, then heck yes hire her. But if not? Do we really want to risk the lives of probably more than 80% of the population (who weigh between 100-200 lbs) just so a woman can have the job?

      People who do not understand that men and women are different, mentally, emotionally and physiologically are delusional.

      • You are the head doctor so tell me if I am off base or not.

        Women tend to be more thoughtful, men tend to be more decisive. In high pressure situations, serving in the military is a good example, decisions have to be made in an instant or lives can be lost. I think you ladies tend to hesitate a bit, think about whatever problem has come up, then come up with a solution to the problem.

        We men on the other hand see the problem then respond instantly. The solution may not be the best but it can be refined as you go and, speaking about high pressure situations again, such actions can save lives.

        I have seen good examples both in the military and in my 38 years working in the heavy construction industry. You gals come up with the right answers to the problem but you hesitate, you have to think about it first, while us boys make a snap decision then improve on it as we go. In our armed services the quick decision can and will save lives. There is no time to think about it, you gotta do it and do it now.

        • You did a darned good job! Women (in general) tend to be more nurturing and emotional, which is biologically a good thing, since they were primarily the ones who cared for the children, and consequently the family. Men (in general) are much more likely to make decisions based strictly on desired goals and outcomes. Men are more analytical - women are more contemplative.

          That said, there is a huge cross-over for most people. Many women are mathematical thinkers with or without the emotional, nurturing side, and many men are "softer", whether or not they also have the analytical side. Like most things, it is a schema (stereotype) rather than an indictment.

          • That's why I have to laugh when people start dissing stereotypes. They have gotten SUCH a bad rap in pop culture that they have been renamed schemas in the psychology world. The thing is there are darned good REASONS for stereotypes. They are in many ways a biologically programmed protective response. Biased or bigoted stereotypes are negative of course, and we can't trust stupid people to understand that stereotypes are not the same as pre-ordained behavior patterns, but stereotypes provide a very good, very fast way to assess the people around us.

          • I've worked with some female heavy equipment operators that were every bit as good at pulling levers as any guy. But when the pucker factor goes into effect, they didn't seem to respond quite as fast. And there's usually no time to think about it when things go bad. I still respected them for their operating skills.

          • One of the best scraper operators I ever hired was a woman, a big old Navajo gal. All I had to work with was 4 Euclid WD-20's, no cab, 5 speed gearbox, cable operated instead of hydrolic, a spring seat. No 630 Cats here, I'm talking old scrapers! Her butt was so big it hung over both sides of the seat but she showed the men on the other 3 how to run an old piece of equipment!

            My boss thought I was crazy until he watched her, the guys on the other scrapers were embarassed enough to learn from an old pro and got with the program. She is one of the very few women I have worked with over the years that showed no hesitation. When she bailed off the side of a slope she had the hammer down, can dragging, and didn't give it a second thought.

        • Wiskey, I realize that you were not addressing me, but please allow me to respond anyway. In GENERAL terms, yes. You are correct that that is how things *tend* to be. But it is not the case 100% of the time. There are other variable to consider beyond the typical male vs female thought pattern.

          Some women have brains that are wired more like the typical male mind in terms of how information is analysed and processed. (I'm one of them) And the reverse is true also. I have never been known as a person who has a difficult time making a decision but yet have been a person with a plan a,b,c,d,e and sometimes f.

          Others might be *trained* to break out of their normal thought patterns, such as with military training for example. Wouldn't you agree that those who have served in the military tend to think differently than those who have not?

          Still, generally speaking you are correct but please allow for exceptions along the way.

            Yes. Those of us who have served our country have a little different outlook on life. From bootcamp on you are trained to make a quick decision in any circumstance that may come along and there is no time to think about plan b,c,d or e. You have to do it now or it might be too late for you and your team.

            There are always exceptions to the rules but think about it and answer one question for me. If you are driving down a two lane road and a truck swerves into your lane what do you do? Weigh all your options or head to the shoulder to avoid a wreck? I wouldn't even think about it, I would head for the ditch then worry about getting out of it later.

          • The responses to the question obviously came from us conservatives. Just for fun, lets ponder a liberal answer:

            Did the truck swerve into my lane on purpose or through no fault of his own? Does he intend to head on me or is there a chance he will swerve back before it's too late? Did I do something to cause him to want to swerve into my lane? Is it possible to avoid a head on by driving off the road or would that be tresspassing on someone elses property. Can I...BAM!

            Seems we think alike on that on. Been there, done that. But I must confess, I learned how to drive from a cop who took me out to where they train for high speed chases. So I've been conditioned to be aware of my surroundings and I have very quick reflexes.

          • Being a motorcyclist, it is first nature to react first and think later.
            Too many times I have had someone in a car turn left in front of me, or otherwise cut me off while riding. I have a split second to react and not end up road kill.
            I have been lucky so far, and had the instinct, reaction, and dexterity to avoid any crashes.
            I just hope my luck holds out.

          • Poppa, the guys that crack me up are the ones, mostly older, who tell you about the times they "laid 'er down" to avoid wrecking. "Laying 'er down" is so rarely the correct response, I have to laugh at them. "You weren't in a position to steer, or brake, or a combination of both? Or you're just not good enough to avoid a collision that way? So you intentionally crashed?"

            Laying it down is a last resort!
            I had one incident where I had a guy turn left in front of me, I swerved to my left to go around the back of him, and there was another car behind him! I had to swerve back to my right to avoid the second car, and barely missed them both. That was the hairiest one for me.

      • I have the distinction of being the first husband of a firefighter in Michigan. Weird distinction, I know. One day shortly after my wife started working, I learned that the wife of her "partner" on the pumper was furious. My wife was 5'4" tall, her partner was 6'5" tall and solid muscle. His wife simply figured her husband was now working without backup, and in a way he was. It's doubtful that my wife could have dragged his unconscious body through the smoke and carried him down a ladder. Interestingly, in the same original class of female firefighters was a woman who I believe (not sure) is now the city's fire CHIEF. She could do anything and everything the men could do. She was awesome. The other two, including my wife, were pushed through training under the pressure of feminist lawyers in city hall. But this one got through on her abilities. In a rational world, the damn feminists would have let that one awesome trainee carry the flame for women, instead of forcing my 5'4" wife through even though she wasn't physically up to the task.

        • Sorry J.P., I can't buy it. Nobody "forced" your wife to do anything, she had to apply for the job. She has taken a job she is not physically qualified to do, a job someone else more physically fit could have, all in the name of "equality". There is no such thing as equality in life or all of us, men and women, would be big, strong, handsome and wear a bra and lacy panties.

          I don't mean to hurt your feelings but the truth is what it is buddy, and you can't hide from the facts.

          • I think he meant "forced" in that she was pushed through the system kinda like the kids in school who can't read. Not that she "forced" to become a firefighter through no choice of her own.

          • What makes you think I disagree with you? It's along time ago now, but I agreed with the people who thought she was too small for the job. The fact that I thought my wife was too small may have hastened our divorce, and the fact that she felt insecure in her occupation may have contributed to the drinking that eventually killed her. Meanwhile the feminist lawyers who ushered her into the occupation think of themselves as heroes.

            Sorry to hear about your ex's problems. It's a shame so many waste their young lives, and lose it, because of their inner demons and drug or alcohol abuse.

          • Cool beans! I have this theory that when the radio station sees people listening to the stream they go, "Hey, this damn show is attacting people!" The number of regular listeners comes twice a year from Arbitron, but the streaming hits they can see for themselves. I think.

            Hell, I don't know. All I know is when I started with the show, it was running public service ads all the time. Now there's more and more regular business commercials, and I'd like to think it has something to do with J.P.'s Moment of Common Sense.

        • My wife's niece just graduated High School, and is going to the academy to be a firefighter. She's a big girl, takes after her dad. She's 6' and about 175 lbs. Pretty strong and should have no problem meeting the physical standards.
          If she was as small as my wife, I would have asked her what the heck she was thinking of when she decided to take on this job.
          Physical standards are there for a reason, the safety of the firemen and the people they are helping. Easing these standards is just asking for trouble.

          • I'm glad you both understood my post. I was NOT saying that women should not be firefighters. I just think that firefighters must meet specific standards. I do not want them lowering the standards to meet some artificial quota, and jeopardizing lives in the meantime. If a woman can do the job as well as a man, then I am even in favor of giving her preferential treatment. But don't lower the requirements. If nothing else, a woman who is in that position will always feel unworthy and incompetent anyway. Who wouldn't? Except maybe Obama.

          • Exactly. Firefighters were traditionally the biggest guys in the neighborhood. They have to carry people and they have to wield those giant axes in blistering heat for hours, to say nothing about turning rust-frozen valves on fire hydrants and running around with a ton of equipment on their backs. If a woman can do it, fine. Just don't change the standards.

  • Typical lib move. Take something AWAY from one group because another group can't use it. We have to be fair, after all. I am not terribly familiar with urinals, but they seem like a smart idea to me. quick to use, easier to clean, and a good way for men to check and make sure their package is at least as big as the next guy. (OK - I am just guessing on the last part).

    Seriously though, the article does say that urinals are actually more difficult to maintain, so maybe it's not a femi-nazi tantrum response.

  • I've seen women use urinals, so I don't know why they can't have gender-neutral warships with urinals. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the Navy has shorter missiles than it used to...
