U.S. relaxes Canadian border checks as agents are told to stop searching buses, trains and planes for illegal immigrants. If you start noticing an influx of people with French accents who say ‘ehh’ after every sentence you’ll know whom to blame.

hmmm...guess where all the terrorists are going to try and travel to now: Canada...They already do, but this will just make it so much easier for the folks coming back from Pakistan or Somalia...but profiling is RACIST, so god forbid we employ it to try and keep the country safe
They've already caught a few middle easterners coming in over the southern border, trying to fake they are Hispanic "immigrants."

Don't remember exactly. Just a vague memory that some of the 9/11'ers (who had legitimate visas at the time) entered through Canada. I may be completely worng. Maybe I mixed these two up!? I DO know that the border with Washington had some problems a while back with illegal Indians (from India) coming in over the Canadian border then blending in with the Indian population in the area.
I believe you are correct sa_rose. I thought I had heard reports that some of the 9/11ers had crossed in the U.S. from Canada. Unless we are both mis-remembering...
Ok, after a few minutes research, it appears that there were reports that 2 of the 9/11 hijackers were thought to have come across the border from Canada. This was later found to be untrue.
Gene Davis, a retired deputy chief in the Border Patrol's sector in Blaine, Wash., emphasized how effective the checks can be. He noted that a check of the Bellingham bus station in 1997 yielded an arrest of Palestinian Gazi Ibrahim Abu Mezer. Abu Mezer skipped out on a $5,000 bond - only to turn up later in Brooklyn, where New York police shot him as he prepared to bomb the city's subway system. Davis also noted that would-be millennium bomb suspect Ahmed Ressam was arrested at the border in late 1999 when he left a ferry from British Columbia to Washington in a rented car full of explosives.
"We've had two terrorists who have come through the northern border here. To put these restraints on agents being able to talk to people is just ridiculous," Davis said. "Abu Mezer got out, but that just shows you the potential that's there with the transportation checks."

I'm all for checking out Arab looking people between 10 and 60. But lighten up on the 60+ y/o cue tips with no accent & born in the USA per passport....instead of vice versa.

I just was in Winnipeg this past Friday for a football game. I went went through the Emerson,MB/Pembina,ND crossing going north on I29 from Fargo & Grand Forks. Entering Canada took 45 minutes, entering the USA, took less then 5. When I went the same route at the end of June last summer, it was more or less the same. This past May, I went to Saskatoon for my neice's wedding, she married a Canadian. I entered at Portal,ND/North Portal,SK. Going into Canada was the easy part, their border guy asked me for my passport, why I was visiting, where I was staying, & when I was leaving. He did'nt stamp my passport, he just handed it back said proceed. Getting back into the USA at Portal,ND, was a pain in the ass. get out of the car go into the office, fill out forms, what did you buy, whatever. They search the car, & then they say you can go.
From my experiance, it seems to depend on what checkpoints you go through. It also seem like if it's easy going 1 way, it's hard going back the other direction. Maybe it's just me, I don't know.
Un. Ffkkng. Believable. The occupant of the Oval Office is a maniac. Honest to God, he must be a lunatic to tell the entire Border Patrol not to patrol the border. If only he'd tell the IRS not to worry about collecting revenue!
Actually Border Patrol feels the need to harass Americans on their own soil. Intersection of NYS11 and 812 is favorite spot for the US Nazi party to set up check points. Where you going, where did you come from, were you all born in America? Happens damn near every week.
I would rather have them do that then sit on their hands while hordes of fun loving Islamic Extremists come running across the northern border. But with Mr Napolitano in charge, she would rather un secure the borders and grope her way across the country at airports. Not so much the border guys, it's the TSA perverts that I hate. Now both borders are wide open for whoever decides to come here and sling dope or, kill someone, or rob someone and run back across the border.
Live here and then tell me how much better it is, especially since they are doing nothing productive elsewhere.
Lived on borders both north and south. The northern guys I knew did a great job, the southern border guys are overwhelmed. The whole idea of a SECURE border is to check everyone they can. It may seem like a hassle but now its not even an argument since they no longer will be doing checks north. My argument is the Gooberment is opening the borders on both sides to allow more shitheads in. I don't think of them as NAZI's. At least they don't grad your junk like the security morons in the airport.
If tsa is grading "junk" now i'm definitely not flying anywhere, anymore. I made enough "f's" in High School. :(
