Va. legislator: Trans-vaginal ultrasound bill led to bedroom strikeout with wife. We think they need to change it to Intercontinental-vaginal, then Obama and the liberals will approve.

  • An ultrasound prior to an abortion doesn’t sound heinous to me. It is part of informed consent.

    Correction: it CAN be part of informed consent. Most physicians, though, are smart enough to be able to teach their patients about an impending surgical procedure without ordering additional expensive and unnecessary tests. It would be very irresponsible of a doctor to order such tests, especially if not covered by insurance, just to "teach" a patient something she already knows. And, let's face it: most American women KNOW what pregnancy is, and understand the purpose and physiological effects of abortion. It's a slap in the face to ALL women for the Va. legislature to assume that they don't. And it's a slap in the face to OB/GYNs to assume that they don't know how to provide preop instruction to women, without the help of politicians.

  • An ultrasound prior to an abortion doesn't sound heinous to me. It is part of informed consent. I do take issue with the required use of a transvaginal US. It DOES give a clearer picture early in pregnancy, but a regular US would do as well. And while I don't agree with the term, the placement of an object in an orifice against the will of the person receiving the object can be termed rape.

  • Before some here start in, let me say that having safe and legal abortions is something that is needed. However, using abortion as a sole means of birth control is wrong. Yea I know this will piss many off but I don’t care. There are way too many measures to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

    Having all of the information about an abortion along with a pregnancy makes sense to me. Many here claim that abortion is just a medical procedure. So if its just that, then why having all of the information about the procedure is so troubling to many?

    Just all know, my youngest son has several issues. He has asperger syndrome, ADHD, OCD and dyslexia. Yet he brings joy to his mother and I ever day.

    As for the wife wanting to play "games" in the bedroom. Dont be surprised when your husband looks for attention from another lady. Sure that is goinng to set many off.

      I think you'd be surprised at how many pro-choice people agree with that sentiment. The problem here is that, if a procedure is legal, the public doesn't get to dictate when it may or may not be performed. It's the physician's job, not ours, to decide when an abortion is indicated and when it isn't. Personally, I disapprove of that plastic surgeon's decision, in the news a few days ago, to do breast implant surgery on her daughter for her 18th birthday. I think it shows a lack of healthy social boundaries, and teaches the daughter some horrible values. But it's not my decision to make, nor is the daughter in any way obligated to justify her decision to the general public. That's what it means to have a right to privacy.

      Because the assumption is that women are too stupid to inform themselves, without the help of the Virginia legislature.
      I recently had radical cancer surgery, and believe it or not there was no law requiring me to look at a tumor, or even the MRI of the tumor, before signing the consent form. Yet cancer is potentially deadly, as well as seriously disabling if not caught in time. Why is it that antichoicers trust women to understand that (and to respect their decision if they opt AGAINST cancer treatment), but not to understand that there's a living fetus growing in their uterus?

      That's a rhetorical question, of course, because we all KNOW why: because this proposed law is a poorly disguised attempt to shame women into chickening out of the procedure.

      I'm sorry, but NO ONE has a right to set up artificial obstacles to deny or delay LEGAL medical procedures that a patient has chosen. There's nothing wrong with preaching anti-abortion sermons, holding prayer vigils for aborted fetuses, even handing out leaflets with gruesome pictures of stillborn fetuses on them. But there is no place for antichoice zealots in the physician's office, unless the patient herself chooses to invite them there.

      I'm sure he does. That's the whole point of being pro-choice: ensuring that every baby brought into this world is a wanted baby.

      Not me. But I'm having a hard time seeing why you think she was "playing games," when she simply wasn't in the mood after watching a televised antichoice argument. Let's face it, it isn't much of a turn-on to hear that one's one husband thinks one is too stupid to understand what abortion is, and has to have it spelled out for her, courtesy of the government.

      I guess it never occurred to you that a woman who's insulted in such a way just might look for attention from another man---one who treats her like an intelligent human being, who's capable of making decisions about her own body without the "help" of politicians.

  • I've read it in many comment threads, usually some liberal douchebag, calling this medical procedure " rape ". I'm not sure how they are coming to this conclusion...because this is definitely NOT rape.

      • The term "rape" is rather melodramatic, but several facts remain:

        1) The Virginia legislature is proposing that women seeking abortion be forced to submit to (and pay for) a totally unnecessary medical procedure.

        2) The medical procedure they're proposing is awkward and invasive. (My ER has a policy that transvaginal ultrasounds are not done on young girls, even if they provide better imaging in a particular clinical situation, for precisely that reason.)

        3) The medical procedure is being pushed on these women by the Virginia legislature, which does not hold a license to practice medicine, nor is it a medical organization.

        My Webster's provides several definitions for the term "rape," the fourth of which is: any outrageous assault or flagrant violation.

        I would say that for non-physicians to force a medical protocol, that is costly and medically unnecessary, simply to coerce a woman into deciding against a LEGAL medical procedure, fits that definition very well.

  • Seems to me this was a primarily Republican effort, and a decidedly non-libertarian action all around. I don't understand how Obama or liberals get tangled up in this one, i'm afraid. Liberals get into some stupid stupid policies, but vaginal probing ain't in their playbook
