Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

  • I know this is redundant, but did the Pencil come with a 30 round clip?

  • If I got suspended every time I acted up in class I would have got out of the 3rd grade when I turned 18. If there had been an adult in the classroom instead of a sissy the kid would have been taken aside, made to understand that cutting up in class is a no-no, and that would have been the end of it. Most of the teachers had a paddle in their desk when I went to school and if I pulled something really dumb it was a swat or a call to my mother. Believe me, I took the swat every time!

    • You had it easy, I went to Catholic School, the nuns used pointers to wack our hands, then they told our parents and we got it again at home!

        (Oh dear - as I was writing that the word "pencil" came out as "penis"! Shocking! Like the time I told a bunch of people in an online game that my favorite drink was bourbon and cock, instead of coke... I still have never lived that down - 10 years later!)

          • Well, my husband was in that online game group (along with 20-some other people) and he is the one who brings it up most often. Come to think of it, maybe old Siggy WAS right!

    • Even if the youth were white or hispanic and their goal was to be evil or to steal it doesn't matter their behavior was cruel, evil and deplorable. In cases like these it is very necessary to carry that gun and at least take one of them out or more if possible.

      • A look at the pictures of the 'teens' shows most look like they're 19 to twenty-seventeen.
        Purely racial motivation drove them to this. Most of America is on the edge of a race war because of our president and all his whistles. This assault did not get much air time at all. I live in Florida and did not hear one peep or see anything about it on any news outlet here. The Trayvon story is still quite alive here, however. Just last week - the same day this happened - Zimmerman fore-going the stand your ground hearing was blabbed over and over.

        • Regardless of motivation they did it and it was wrong and evil and they should go away for life, if needed the death penalty or if they (the pair who were attacked) had a weapon a few of them should have died on the street like dogs. If we start living in the world of some crimes get more noticed because of the motivations of the perpetrators that is not a good road to go down on. The media covering some crimes and not others because of some political correctness agenda bothers me and we shouldn't do it on the other side either and focus on one aspect of the situation.

          I don't appreciate that a bigoted person who murders a young gay white male more jail time and punishment (and more stories) than if the victim had been an old heterosexual white/black/asian female and there was no racial motivation involved. I think we (Conservatives) should not fall into that trap. WE should be outraged and seek justice for all crimes regardless of motivations. The only time I make an exception is in the cases of terrorism. It is important to know motivation in order to try to prevent it.

          It makes me angry because that Casey Anthony woman should have NEVER left prison. Then we got into the crap about her probably being abused by her Dad and her not living her life and all this crap and she goes free?!? The Treyvon Martin thing should be on the issue alone of if it is okay to follow someone with a weapon if the person feels they COULD be trouble. If the person does become a threat after being followed should the first person go free after killing the second person? Everything else is crap.

          Justice should definitely be blind to the crap and just stick to the facts of the case. Did the mob hurt the pair walking the street innocently and without provocation? YES? Then go to prison. Done. If they had been white teens or hispanic teens should they get less or more time? You see what I am saying? I used to believe in the well if the motivations are this and that they should get more punishment... I was wrong. It creates classes of citizens that shouldn't exist and that just feeds into the political correctness insanity of this country/world.

    Keep your head down, say nothing and continue thru the govt indoctination protocols that now make up our schools...

  • Common sense has been flushed down the toilet. These so-called zero tolerance plans are ignorant and those came up with them had to be the ones picked on everyday in school. There was no threat to anyone by this little guy.

    His parents should demand a decade of school paid for counseling as he's the one scared for life. After a few of the 6 figure bills, these policies would be no more.

  • Hey, We should Banned all Pencils, Pens and Crayons and Rolled Up Paper and Fingers . We should cut off all our Fingers just so we don't make anything that looks like a Gun and our Voices that can make a Gun Noise, Ripe out all the Vocal Cords. and those EVIL Poptart Guns ( Damm You Poptart Guns!) , When will all this MADNESS stop. Are we living like Animals, we need Big Government and Teachers (union) to help us , because we can not do it for the children alone! GEE, Really. When did the world gone upside down? Kids play good guys, bad guys. Oh and No Running on a playgound. Walk to have fun with the other children. there might be a Lawsuit you know!
